I prefer non-retractable claws, just because I prefer somewhat more "realistic" or at least grounded designs in general. That's probably a big reason I like Meshi so much, despite overall being pretty generic fantasy, details like the character designs sell the world in a way that honestly no other Jap fantasy series I can think of does. Every race looks unique and has some coolness or appeal to them, like you can feel the love poured into each concept and design.

With the doodling I've done with a catgirl design I have for my own autistic shit, I ended up going for cat like ears on the sides because on a humanoid skull it makes more anatomical sense than the ears on top if you take into the account where the actual ear canals etc connect to. Cats kind of get away with it easier because their skulls are flatter. Similarly, with the hands, you can't really have human/primate like hands with retractable claws due to how the retractability of the claws being tied to the final fingerbone joint working as a lever to move the claw, as opposed to as a finger tip. Losing the finger tips in exchange for retractable claws would lead to a pretty major loss of dexterity imo which has major consequences for how the character can interact with the world.I appreciate Kui's worldbuilding a lot in Dungeon Meshi due to how much she has paid attention to the biological "realism" of her world and designs.
