I finally finished Gintama. It's a series I quite liked, but it's very inconsistent. It has some really good arcs with good emotional development, well-used comedy, and acceptable doses of action, but then there are weak arcs that clearly aren't well-prepared and are rushed. The episodes are similar; the comedy can be repetitive or use references for no reason. The ending is too battle-shonen with the typical "oh no, x character is going to die," "we start running, sad flashback," "cliffhanger," "power of the friendship" "everyone is here," although it's somewhat tolerable and more or less fits. On the good side, there are some very good arcs like SA and FS, which are very well-structured. They're not on the level of the HxH arcs, but for a shonen anime, they're very good. The cast is excellent, everyone shines at some point (except Otsu). Gintoki is a great mc and Madao is cool. I would have liked to see more of Shinpachi. I always thought the antagonist would be some random Amanto with a sad backstory, but there wasn't much time to include a "final boss" like that. The revelation led to the silver soul arc, which I think was somewhat weak because it was quite formulaic (very surprising), but it helped to develop Takasugi better and therefore give Gintoki closure. Although I didn't like the baby Takasugi thing either

The ending was a bit too serious and dramatic, but overall it's probably the best comedy I've read, perhaps rivaled by Prison School. Gintoki is funny but cool, wise and not too annoying like many other MCs. And there's some pretty clever world design that allows for magic, sci-fi, and meta bullshit to happen quite naturally. This whole thing kinda gives me the Doctor Who vibes, for some reason.
