Haibane Renmei is the reason why I became a Christian. I am forever thankful to Haibane Renmei for that.
Haibane Renmei changed my life and I hope it has changes yours too.

How? To me it felt like typical Japanese spiritualism rather than Christian.
>>
>>287231255
I remember there was an interview by Carrie Savage where she considered Haibane Renmei to be a Christian experience. Savage is the dub voice of Rakka and a Christian, and the interview was quite an eye-opener. Sure, we always assert that subs > dubs, but it struck me how another person shared a similar experience that I did - one that saw Haibane Renmei as Christian. Although aBe is a Buddhist, the story was written to be as interpretive as possible much like Lain. There psychological, Buddhist, animist and even Shinto viewings of Haibane Renmei, but the Christian interpretation resonates with me the most.

Haibane renmei came to me at a very difficult time in my life. It was back when my life was coming apart and I would spend most days with guilt eating at me over things I did. I was even contemplating suicide for a while. Haibane renmei pulled me back into life by having me face the reality of my situation. Having characters wandering aimlessly looking for forgiveness that never came until they all realise that the only one person they had to seek forgiveness from is themselves made me realise I had to do the same. Since I decided to forgive myself I have a different outlook on life, and that's been really helpful. Losing everything, even your identity, is really helpful when you have to confront the darkness lurking in your heart.

I don't think there will ever be another piece of media quite like that. I'm forever grateful for coming across it. I've been collecting all the doujinshi and merchandise and even got a Rakka tattoo (pictured)

the animation is good sometimes and shockingly bad for one episode. However the story, setting and characters drive it. My theory is that most of the budget was used on a small handful of scenes, leaving a very sparse budget for other scenes.

The extent of Christianity in the show is completely limited to the aesthetics of the Haibane, who explicitly aren't angels. Shinto isn't a major inspiration either, iirc aBe confirmed it on a livestream of his.

>>287237531
While you do have a point, I'd argue that Haibane Renmei uses its Christian aesthetics in a more symbolic and fruitful manner. Its not like Evangelion, which haphazardly used Christian names and themes for its own bizarre lore.
aBe has stated that the series is meant to accommodate different interpretations, and I believe this would allow for a Christian viewing of the series. Indeed, the Haibane aren't angels, but that doesn't mean there aren't 'true' angels in the show.

I can't get over how much i love the tone of Haibane Renmei. The color palette. The pacing. The Hazy SoL contrasted with the heavier scenes (See picrel which happens right after having to attach rakka's halo with hanger wire)

Words don't do it justice, man. It's really something special.

haibane-renmei is kind of underwelming for me desu. I guessed the limbo(?) plot line like 3-4 episodes prior to the ending. I guess 'grey wing' is a position given to those who died innocent, by which the suicidals are deemed 'guilty'. The struggle of the elder one (yes im bad at remembering names) is not that touching, or maybe its because im desensitized.
The film would've felt better if i watch it 2 years earlier idk.

>Haibane Renmei is the reason why I became a Christian.
You must be rather dim, because there is little christianity in Haibane Renmei, beyond the vaguely visual imagery of the haibane themselves (not that the haibane renmei themselves look very Christian either).

>Although aBe is a Buddhist, the story was written to be as interpretive as possible much like Lain. There psychological, Buddhist, animist and even Shinto viewings of Haibane Renmei, but the Christian interpretation resonates with me the most.
Haibane Renmei is an extremely blatant riff on the even-numbered chapters of Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World. It is quite easy to misinterpret it as something else, if you are unfamiliar with the book.

When they can finally live in the world and not hate it or themselves, a biological imperative activates that forces them to commit suicide by touching the wall. And they tell each other a fairy tale about moving on to cope with fear of it and keep working. And people who can't make progress towards that death live in shame on top of evidently life preserving self loathing, for even still existing beyond the grace period of youth. That's messed up. Is it supposed to be a metaphor for ego death? Like what if your body destroyed itself on autopilot when you died? Or is it just the huge gap in self concept girls have to leap to become women? You literally leave the world people can see when you stop letting them define you, and you can't see outside it until you break the habit completely. But you still must be ready for death to even live. It only reminds me about ugly things in life and it's vague. I'm glad the whole show is short.

Haibane Renmei is easily one of the worst anime to come out of the early 2000s, if not all time. Some bleak beige town with an AI pisstone color palette, filled with suicidal teenagers and bad Christian symbology: it clearly appeals to a demographic of those born well after the show aired, people who ream themselves with inflated ego nostalgia trips who think theyre cool for being into "vintage lost media". Haibane Renemi strangely glorifies suicidal ideation, but really all it does in the process is insist upon itself while proving how people who hate themselves are just pathetic energetic drains on others. It appeals to narcissists and those who can't get over their own problems. I got 5 episodes in before I dropped it, and I wouldn't recommend anyone waist their time with this overglorified heap of garbage. Bad animation, bad voice acting, shrieking untuned instruments for the soundtrack, and almost a 1:1 ripoff of a poorly written book whos hack of an author is the Japanese equivalent of Stephen King. the budget would've better been spent literally anywhere else. I'd be surprised if Haibane Renmei generated even a cent of profit from sales. Good grief.
>>
>>287258954
No, it isn't. Based off a damaged book, Rakka and Nemu deduce that Glie exists somewhere between "the land and sky", or "Earth and Heaven". Did you even watch the show, or are you trolling?

It dosen't not, the final episodes are dedicated to a Reki realizing their suicide was a mistake and confronting the memories being help by .Rakka so they can fly and move on from the town, hell they even show the train.
>I got 5 episodes in before I dropped it

I'll always be mesmerized by the opening moments of episode 3. Rakka walking through that dilapidated, abandoned building with that calm, serene music. The beautiful contrast between such a beautiful girl and such a dirty, deplorable place.

Haibane Renmei is easily one of the best anime to come out of the early 2000s, if not all time. Some beautifully muted beige town with an ethereal watercolor palette, filled with introspective teens and rich Christian symbolism: it clearly appeals to a demographic of those born well after the show aired, people who cherish genuine artistry and who think it’s cool to uncover vintage lost media. Haibane Renmei strangely validates the struggle with melancholy, but really all it does in the process is invite contemplation while proving how people who face their inner darkness can find grace and connection. It appeals to the self-reflective and those working through their own problems. I got 5 episodes in before I realized I’d found a masterpiece, and I would highly recommend anyone spend their time with this underappreciated heap of treasure. Beautiful animation, nuanced voice acting, hauntingly dissonant instruments for the soundtrack, and almost a 1:1 loving homage to a profoundly written book whose visionary author is the Japanese equivalent of Stephen King. The budget could not have been better spent anywhere else. I'd be surprised if Haibane Renmei didn't generate a fortune in cult classic sales. やれやれだぜ。
>>
>>287259074
Wrong. Rewatch the episode. That's something Nemu and Rakka came up with themselves for their creation story. The Haibanes come from the outside world and the thoughts and feelings of the people they left in the outside world can enter Glie as crows. The Toga leave the town to trade with people from the outside world. Did you even watch the show?
>>
>>287259052
>>287259953
Haibane Renmei is easily one of the most controversial anime to come out of the "hidden masterpieces" genre of early digital animation. Those who connect with it defend its "Christian themes" to the death despite the show barely having anything "Christian" in it at all outside of shallow references to sin and angelic aesthetics, not to mention it borrows heavily on "The Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World". On the other side, those who don't connect with it fall into two camps: One camp is highly offended by its "Christian" themes and blindly and unfairly attack everything about it. The other camp just calls it boring and would rather go watch Dragonball Z instead.

I think people getting so attached to this anime shows that a specific demographic is starving for something, ANYTHING, that looks like a Christian anime. The only things I can think of are My Last Day (which is just a short "OVA" of sorts), Superbook (which is outdated, and although the 3D animation reboot isn't that bad, it puts off a lot of people), and maybe Ascension After depending on how its displayed. A lot of other anime use Christian imagery or themes, but it's less "God-centered" and more "let's talk about stuff related to God without the 'God' part so we don't offend people."
>>
>>287231072
Happy for you, but ABe stated repeatedly the story doesn't have anything to do with. Christianity. At least, in his mind, as for other people's readings the sky is the limit
>>
>>287248521

There's a doujin that has all of ABe's characters reincarnating as Haibane. The twins at the end of the show turn out to be NieA and Mayuko if I remember correctly. Lain ends up showing up too, as well as Ran. Poor Rakka dealing with NieA was pretty fun
>>
>>287236359
That tattoo is fantastic, as well as your story. I'm really had you're doing better, I've known other people who were also pulled from the brink by Haibane Renmei. I've considered having a tattoo made of the logo too, but yours is a lot cooler.
