It had full episodes dedicated to a single rakugo story and the performance was often the focus, with how it resonated with the real world for some reason or other. The stories fly by pretty fast, the backstories of several characters are glossed over, lots of commentaries, dozens of characters, rivalries, competitions, etc. It's pretty fun but the only melodrama is similar to a sports manga, not a soap opera.

The episode was pretty good except when it came to the actual rakugo performance.If you're not familiar with the stories, then as the audience you depend on the commentaries from the sidelines to spoonfeed you random facts about them. This is probably the thing I hated the most in Initial D and any other spokon. The direction relies on these commentaries not just for the exposition ("the key aspect of this story is this") but also how the performance is going, the atmosphere inside the place, the public's reaction, etc. The performer, who should be responsible for affecting most of those things but they get sidelined in favor of some flashback or some faggot talking over it.It's flashy, and well done, but in the end you're being manipulated into reading how things are going. The very opposite of show not tell.The manga coud get away with this, but the anime is going to have a harder time, specially with the pacing of competitions with several performances.

Given the medium, in the manga you weren't supposed to know that Akane's dad's performances were shitty. This was done to put you in her mindset, that what happened to her dad was unfair. It isn't until much later in the manga that she makes peace with this fact: that her dad was a mediocre rakugoka. But the anime kinda spoils this thanks to the added voice acting and mannerisms. Within the first minute, you get that this dude isn't good at it.

I'm thoroughly impressed, though given the pedigree of the source material, a bad adaptation was pretty unlikelyMy only issue is that the manga can show people talking and the performance simultaneously due to the speech bubbles, but this effect in the anime means that you have people talking over the performance which is kind of distracting. Everything else is good. I think this is the best voice acting I've ever seen from Jun Fukuyama and it makes me feel kinda old that this guy voices a dad now (similar to how I felt with Rie Kugimiya voicing a mom in the recent Gundam show)
