I knew absolutely nothing about this going into it. I only found out it was by Hiromu Arakawa just before I watched it. I was pleasantly surprised. That was a great first episode. Great pacing and great direction, animation was good too. RIP (maybe?) fake-imouto, you were cute in those two scenes.Also, I can't help but notice the braids-girl is strikingly similar to Sawatari from CSM. Not just her design but her ability and also her attitude to a degree. I'd bet there was some inspiration there. Pretty good first episode. My only complaint is that I wish we had spent a little more time in the village before everything went to shit. The story being set in the present is supposed to be a twist, but it doesn't feel like one because we spent so little time establishing the setting. At no point did I think 'we are in the distant past' before the reveal, I just thought 'we are in a distant village,' which ended up being the case. I'm surprised by how explicitly gory it was, btw.

About 2.5 chapters per remaining episode isn't too bad. There are short chapters where there's mostly action but we do have a couple of exposition dumps that could slow it down. Plus even ending at just 51 works since Asa and Yuru going on a solo trip is a good ending spot that screams "More next season"

Finally got a chance to sit down and watch it then browse the thread. Animeonly (for now) but isn't the response weirdly negative in this thread? The episode had intrigue, characters are doing cool stuff with purpose, animation and visual direction are competent. I expected the pacing to be more drawn out before the reveal (obvious the second I saw the contrails), like a double length first episode or a two-parter, but nope. I think it still worked though. I am getting an impression right away that this is going to be more of characters working through some personal issues rather than hero going on a journey. Very good, strong, competent first episode imo.
