Even if they're not full-on death games, stories about games always have some insane penalty for failure like dropping literally everything, regressing multiple levels, or long lockout periods. But everything in the past 20 years of actual MMO design has shown that, despite offering these hardcore elements to players, audiences have failed to bite every time. And the fiction wants me to believe that every person in Japan and their dog is either playing these games or following the top players like its goddamn professional baseball? Part of it is the structural issues (games want to homogenize players, but stories want to highlight exceptions; players broadly want low stakes, but stories demand risk and consequences) and part of it is just that I think the people that write these stories haven't honestly engaged with a game since they were children, and are stuck in that playground era of telling wild tales about games that they heard from their uncle who worked for Nintendo.
