>there are people who complain about "too many characters" in a fucking battle shonen, a genre where a large cast of characters with different abilities is the pointWhat do these people even think having fewer characters would do for a genre where the plot is just an excuse for characters to fight?
>>287249142Bleach? Best animanga
>>287249142>What do these people even think having fewer characters would do for a genre where the plot is just an excuse for characters to fight?Because having too many characters can lead to most of them not getting to do anything, but having a smaller cast leads to them getting more room to contribute to the story.A bloated cast can often lead to a lot of them becoming irrelevant to the wider story and getting sidelined, especially in stories about upward progression and getting stronger to fight bigger and badder enemies. With a smaller cast, these kinds of problems become less common, and the recurring characters get to contribute a lot more to the story if handled properly.
>>287249344>Because having too many characters can lead to most of them not getting to do anythingAnd? Who the fuck expects every character to do something all the time?
>>287249377Having a minor role is fine but there are way too many characters in this genre who do literally nothing, you could completely remove them and the story would be exactly the same.
>>287249377When the majority of characters in a series about fighting don't actually fight despite being fully capable of doing so, there's a problemLooking at you, MHA
>>287249377It’s not about everyone doing something all the time, it’s about the fact that when there are too many shitters in the story, nobody’s achievements and victories actually matter. In a bloated cast characters become disposable. You get five chapters of a side character no one gives a shit about showing off a new ability just for them fuck get wrecked immediately by your average Aizen to show how scary he is. It’s a complete waste of time. When the cast is tighter mangaka can actually develop dynamic choreography and strategy because they aren't rushing to give 50 different niggas their moment.
Honestly, I think Bleach is a bad example of this because most of the characters do get to showcase their powers and a lot of them get screentime/major fights. There are only a few specific characters that get a lot of attention in Bleach for being jobbers, most notably Chad but also Orihime, Ishida and Renji. Mostly the rest of the characters are side characters or get 1-2 major fights per arc where they win. It's not like Heroaca or even Naruto.>>287249377Then why are you crying about a big cast being "bad"? Plenty of battle manga have a "large cast" when you include one-off villains/allies. This criticism is leveled at series where there's a massive cast that are all recurring, but the vast majority of them do not get to fight or ever showcase their abilities. Nobody is saying to write a story about 5 characters, but having 20 "major characters" where only 3 of them ever win their fights is a waste of 17 characters.
>>28724991580% of their jobber status would be taken away if Kubo just had Chad, Renji, Uryu, Orihime and Rukia take down Yammy instead of Kenny and Byakuya.
Please care about bleach...
