I love the stylistic choices they are going for. They are using it to showcase sequences that weren't in the manga or expand on those that exist, like Aoteru dashing to the farmers or Saki stopping the tax collector.

I had no idea what to expect from this, but that was one of the strongest first episodes of the season.
Not surprised to hear to mangaka was an assistant to the Under Ninja guy. The art style is pretty similar, but it also shares some of the same borderline absurdist black comedy and a similar balancing act between depicting cruel faction politics matter-of-factly and humanizing both the perpetrators and the victims.

He's supposed to be another "facts and logic" MC which would be fine but the problem is he isn't. They brutally killed a man in front of them for slightly offending that official but instead of telling his wife off he COMPLIMANTED her on fighting against the tax collector like he couldn't predict they would both be in danger. Like what where's his logic behind that? And it was hard to feel sorry for his wife after being the know all girlboss character who was obviously never before put into place. Dumbass wanted to instantly jump ten guys who just finished brutally killing a villager. Hopefully the other characters will be written more realistically.

In any case, I actually watched the episode, and it turned out to be quite disappointing. It was just a series of unfortunate events involving paper-thin characters that neither set anything up nor amounted to anything. I'm usually not a fan of artsy direction in anime. Even mainstream shonens like JJK now are doing it and it's led to mixed results (Maki episode was awful, while Higurama and Sendai were great for example).

It's not a /pol/ shitpost story like Charlie, it's modernized attempt ar Three kingdoms. It's mostly court drama about mc Kongmining around as advisor and solving stuff to conquer Japan with his superior knowledge of agriculture and basic logic.

That was a great first episode. The direction was really cool, a lot of interesting shots/cuts. The animation was also impressive for how detailed some of the linework was. I thought the protagonist and his wife were going to have a Napoleon/Josephine relationship but that was obviously cut short. I guess this will just be a revenge story of sorts, nothing wrong with that. I'm not sure how believable the overall premise is, but the idea of a total psychopath coming to power by backstabbing people, and then ruling with violence and intimidation, is at least realistic. The only think I didn't like was how it handled the credits with him mourning his wife - it felt rushed. I know nothing about the manga, but I have high hopes for this.
Also, I can't help but be reminded of Golden Kamuy, even though the story is completely different. It's probably just all the snow and the uniforms.
