That was certainly a messy first episode. The moment the spirit fight happened everything sped by way too quickly. The way the spirit possession works, how they can summon fellow spirits and how the songs are tied to the combat isn't explained very well. Both Symphogear and Princession had much smoother first episodes with the songs more clearly tied into the combat.
