The world before the alien's came is very interesting to me. There was an advanced technological society, with laser rifles and spaceships (iirc), and the common citizenry had good standards of living, could enjoy leisurely activities in what looked like safe and clean public spaces. John sat and played video games in his room like I do. But then either in the same country or the next country over, there was a whole slave society with it's own Roman colosseum where slaves fought to the death for the public's entertainment. Are these people humans who have settled on another planet? Are they aliens and the Rome similarities are all just a coincidence? There are a lot more questions to answer, but Otori might not ever address any of them. None of it is really relevant to the story now anyway.
