One issue I have with MHA trying to say that society sucks is that they barely show it.

Yeah, we have Mt. Lady, who was very vain in the beginning, and Endeavor, who was a terrible father—but they both end up as heroes willing to fight to the death for the greater good.

For the most part, we only see the good side of heroes. The little bit of bad is mostly told to us rather than shown. And even when it is shown, it’s not really explored or called out in a meaningful way.

It feels like the “evils” of hero society exist mainly to give villains something to complain about—so they have an excuse for their actions.

Japan, culturally, tends to avoid directly calling people out (defamation laws are strict), and there’s a strong emphasis on order and respecting authority. So instead, the story uses clearly evil characters to tear society down, and then rebuilds it through the “perfect” protagonist who never falters.

The heroes themselves are portrayed as too good to directly challenge or change society. So the story has villains do that work for them, allowing the heroes to ultimately step in and simply say, “be better.”

They are fundamentally incapable of challenging the societal status quo

Shonen is not a fucking genre, it's a demographic label, which has no effect on how a story is written.
