>>287296809Interesting concept that I want to like, but the author absolutely refused to give the fantasy world anything that would make the conflict at all interesting. The fantasy world armies and magic are just fodder for machine guns, and the few things in their world that WOULD be a problem for the modern military all coincidentally shack up with the JSDF completely unprompted to make them even more powerful instead of giving them a challenge. I'm not saying that modern military hardware shouldn't be strong, but its so one sided that the conflict becomes boring. There should be magical threats and enemies that the JSDF doesn't have an immediate answer to, like mind control magics or ghosts. Magic armors designed to fighting dragons and other powerful monsters that are functionally bulletproof to small arms fire, local gods that don't take kindly to their territory being invaded. Shit like that. Watching a bunch of roman legionaires getting gunned down by apache attack helicopters isn't interesting, because there was never any illusion that the fantasy romans ever could have even theoretically fought back in any meaningful way there. And in a fantasy setting where they could have been given literally any combination of powers that the author felt like giving them, this is just a failure of imagination. For every fight that the JSDF steamrolled, there needed to be one where the JSDF had no choice but to run away from because they had no idea how to fight that kind of enemy yet. Make it a back and forth so that the JSDF's victories felt earned, and leave both sides in the conflict confused and uncertain about what the other side is capable of.

I thought the premise was interesting, but the execution was mid. Could have been better in a few ways but it's been a bit since I saw it so I can't detail the exact ways. Also because burger their behavior as far as military strategy seemed a bit too soft than what I'd expect, but that might be me expecting others to behave the way I think our military does.
