I just watched through this series for the first time (sans Rebuilds). I was able to follow the plot, more or less. I was even able to get the Instrumentality scenes and all the over-the-top religious imagery. But what the living FUCK was with the IRL scenes in EOE?

As much as I hate Anno for the Rebuilds and in general for being what money and society made him into, his magnum opus that consisted of NGE, EoE and Death^2 is everlasting in quality. Rebuilds are just Anno without motivation and creativity trying to ressurect his past magnum opus for a quick buck and to lead on his dedicated cash cows that are Eva fans while berating them for their taste that puts bread on his table. A hypocrite and a liar. His works are good, but the man is as rotten as they come.
