Tard here, just finished HxH99 and the Yorknew OVA. I'm really confused by all the praise the series gets. I don't think it's bad or anything, I've mostly had a good time, but the idea that the series is the peak of the medium and a deconstruction of shonen has fallen completely flat for me. My friend said Yorknew was where it gets really good and that the 99 blversion is better than the other adaptation, but I just thought it was alright. It had a cool look and some well directed scenes, but I didn't find the writing that interesting. Kurapika gets some cool stuff, and the Phantom Troupe is fun, if very one-dimensional, but it's still very standard stuff. Stuff like FMA03, which I don't even even like that much past the second half and consider to have overall weaker writing, had more interesting ideas in it. I feel like I've been watching a different show from everyone else. Is there more in the manga/2011 that pushes the envelope? Do I just have bad taste?

Yorknew is more just a really good standard shounen arc.Also even though it looks nice, 1999 tends to do this thing where it makes additions to the story that are supposed to develop the characters more but they end up basically being the opposite of what the characters are, it also tends to add lots of stuff where characters basically tell you what to think. You're fine to just pick up the manga and continue on but the next arc is probably not one you'll enjoy significantly more, but once you get past that you'll probably find what youre looking for. If you enjoy that then go back and read the first arcs in the manga to get them untainted.

Gon needing to train with his fishing rod when he was seemingly a master at using it in episode 2 also caught my attention. The most egregious part of the characters telling the viewer how to feel was probably after Gon and Hanzo's fight. Still, I'm glad I watched it since some moments were really well directed and animated (Hisoka stalking the guy in the forest sticks out to me, and Gon's fight with Hanzo). I'll get through Greed Island and head towards Chimera Ant. How's the 2011 anime?

Greed Island is poorly adapted in both 1999 and 2011. Heaven's Arena is poorly adapted in 1999. Visually the 2011 anime is very boring and uninspired until CA, CA and Election look very good though. 2011's voice acting is very good, ep 116 has some of the best voice acting ive heard in anything. The first 10 episodes of 2011's chimera ant arc are full of filler and bad pacing, but once you make it past episode 85 its a good adaptation.

I just did a slow reread of the arc after speed reading it the past decade, here are a little of my thoughts>there is glaring setup for a giant class/civil war, for the whale sinking, etc. in fact, Mizaistorm has mentioned the whale sinking (chapter 380), Tserri’s comrades have mentioned the civil war (chapter 394). I’m inclined to believe neither of these will happen and that Togashi will use the threat of these things to build suspense and tension as the war continues to go crazy. > I ride the line between, this text may not be necessary-I need this text to understand what the hell is going on-getting this text helps to understand the actions of these characters in this intense mind game.
