The author was clearly trying to ape the picaresque LN format but didn't really have the worldly experience to actually think of sensible episodic conflicts with some kind of interesting concept or moral underpinning so instead most of the conflicts are comically edgy with confused or inconsistent ideas and the solution is often just "make a token gesture and fuck off to leave others to deal with the consequences."As a show it's a mind numbing demonstration that some formats are harder to write than others.
The "edgy" stuff is basically early installment quirks, when the author was still throwing shit on the wall to see what sticks. Once it's got a core audience the stories just pander to that core and "edginess" went by the wayside.
