>Kusunoki is sleeping happily. He's sincerely looking forward to meeting his childhood friend Himeno tomorrow.
>But having read his life's "summary," I know.
I know that the next time Kusunoki meets Himeno, it will deeply, deeply wound him. I know that he'll taste far more despair than he's felt even in these past days.

>It's embarrassing, but I'm secretly delighting in it.
>He should be hurt more. He should despair more.
>Then he'll have no one else he can rely on, and be forced to cry on my shoulder.
>...I shake my head. Stop thinking about this trivial nonsense.
"I say a little prayer" extra chapter from the light novel. This was written by the author btw (a woman).

you didn't need to tell us, women hate women more than any man ever could

Still hoping some director picks this up and makes a movie out of it.

They aren't gonna do it. Kuzonoki is literally the most antisoy character out there. It would flop because most movie watchers are consooomers and slop enjoyers.
>>
reading through it now, god damn just pure suffer porn but it's compelling. on chapter 10

Finished it. Ending wasn't much to the tone of the rest and a little too saccharine.

Glad I caught this thread haphazardly, would recommend.

High IQ or speedreading throught it?

Eh, it felt too convenient. I get that the entire thing is about searching for purpose and meaning and he did find it in the end. But the whole Hallmark "but I got you the thing bought for me" moment wasn't to my tastes.

Also I would've preferred if the post-ending side-chapter had him with his haircut so there could be some speculation and interpretation of those final moments between them.
>>
>>287337178
it's only 16 chapters, it's not a big time requirement.

I dont think it was that convinient. If you carefully read, its subtly stated that Kuzonoki its quite talented at painting. Also an above average painter, being the famous schizo of his town and some people pretending that Miyagi its real/Miyagi actually living and being there will help ground his fame. I can see the result of he getting his little corner in art history as something quite real.

takopi got adapted so this is very possible. takopi was more popular on japanese twitter because of the memes though, it was a funny manga
>>

No, I have no issues with that. I understood fully that he was skilled at painting. The thing I didn't like was she sold off her life for his sake while he did for hers. I get what it represents, that both of them finally found a light at the end of their darkness and would do anything for each other, but it was just so hokey. I like that the intent for it happened, just not the execution.

It's my only complaint and it's a small one.
>>

>hokey
I dont think its that way. She really loved the guy and was as hopeless and boring as him. It was like the ultimate shit test of going all in, in their relationship. Afterall this was written by a girl.
>>

Himeno was also a thing I didn't like, but mostly I feel like she was written poorly. Same with the high-school friend.

Just over the top hateful and cruel despite their ability to meet Kusonoki on good terms. It's utterly irrelevant to the overall message, but it stuck out to me.
>>
I realize I have been autistically taking pictures of vending machines like Kusunoki, aswell as utility poles, clouds, train tracks etc.

>Himeno
Anon, I unironically treated a girl that had a crush on me by ignoring her feelings and just going along the way, like I didnt care. I wasnt hurtful or anything. Recently I send her a message about how my life is going, she continued the exchange a little bit, and so she asked what kind of books I like, when I genuinely tell her whats going on my life, she send a laughing emoji and proceeded to ghost me. Life is that brutal and girls tend to act like Himeno when they got hurt, I realized the same as this guy that she started hating me the moment I acted like I didnt care. She still hasnt blocked me, but I didnt reach out to her, since that brief exchange.

She left him a note saying she was planning on traumatizing him by committing suicide in front of him for not understanding her coded letter asking him to rescue her

That's quite different from just growing apart
>>
>>287338841
She wanted to hurt him, just like he hurt her. In her mind killing herself is the best way to archive that. She also was a single mom and thought that Kusunoki would lose interest on her if she told him that she had a kid and so on.

While I was typing up a response about how she behaves was stupid and detracted from the story, it did make me think a bit more about how she and Kusunoki have the same situation, but handled it differently.

She explodes in a ball of blame and wants to blast everyone along with her while still having some sort of hope and spirit (to some dgree) meanwhile just silently suffers and withers away an empty husk.

I was gonna say it's bullshit and bad writing, but it did make me reflect a bit more. Maybe it's just some grasping at shadow Dark Souls lore bullshittery, but I don't dislike it as much any more.

I remember really enjoying this, but felt that the ending was a little too easy.
Maybe I should reread it.
>>
>>287339330
It was a little too easy, but it fit the themes and it kept it from dragging on too long. I don't think an extra 5 chapters of him earning a better lifespan wage would've been fruitful to the story.
>>

I remember reading this here with /a/ . What a delightful read through.
>>
>>287339154
I mean the deepest lore here. Is why she decided to kill herself in front of Kusunoki, why she wanted to kill herself since she was a kid, why she didnt tell her about the kid and why she sended that old letter when she was pregnant and why after thinking that Kusunoki was crazy, she still wanted to hurt him in the future. My take here is that the husband was a guy resembling in appearence to Kusunoki, when she realized it didnt work and it wasnt like the real guy, she sended that letter thinking that Kusunoki would figure out that it was the time capsule´s letter and come for her rescue. That didnt happen and if he didnt sell her lifespan, she´ll eventually set up a trap to get back at him aka killing herself. Also Kusunoki didn´t understand her (he didn´t think she was girly) so he´s an unreliable narrator in that aspect.
>>
One of my favorite manga ever. I am a sucker for these sort of downer angst stories and I am not ashamed to admit it.
>>
>>287339550
Her anger towards him reads a lot like self-loathing if you wanna explore it that deeply. She's just so angry that her life ended up where it did and blames him for not saving her beforehand and especially afterwards. Maybe she blames herself and is deflecting that with her trauma-suicide, but that level of anger is a counter-point to Kusunoki's acceptance that life is shit and over and that it's not going to get any better.
