I read light novels almost exclusively at this point. I read a couple manga originals and I almost never watch anime outside of rewatching shows I've seen already.

If you look at light novels as an intrinsic part of the anime and manga sphere (which admittedly they are) then I get why you'd be interested in reading them while also not being interested in western literature at all, but to me they're all just books. I've always had an interest in anime and manga because I like the artwork just as much as the stories themselves.

You see you have to be extremely intelligent to understand light novels. For example take this simple passage, “She was holding a basket of apples.” Easy, right? Wrong! For the light novel you have to imagine what kind of basket the girl is holding. Is it a simple cross stitched basket or something more ornate? What kind of apples are in the basket? Granny Smith, Fuji, Red Delicious? The reader is in control with their own imagination. The manga removes this. It reduces the art of imagination. Sure the black and white drawing means you have to think a little about what kind of apples she is holding, but you can clearly see the basket, how she is holding it, and her environment. The anime reduces this even further. You can see the color before you. Everything is simplified so that even the most idiotic simpleton would understand it. There is no thought needed you just need to consume the pretty pictures.
