If you aren't watching anime on a 4k OLED why even bother?

My best years are on 720p media, upscaling AI is shit. I know you don't care.

You care about bigger numbers, like optical mouse sensors and bigger DPI, watch those souls starlight blink.

You do know that 2160 is the least common multiple of 720 and 1080, right?

shiggy diggy

4k is a meme, 1080p is still the norm, even for videogames its just enthusiast level
and I actually hate how not only we got stuck, but basically regressed thanks to the centralization of a lot of shit
>>
>>287341216
Yeah projectors where even the top of the line had a lifespan of four years tops. I was done with the projector meme after my 2nd 1 thousand dollar projector died.
>>
>>287340003
Anime was not meant to be seen at any resolution greater than 480i.
You can not change my mind.
>>
I have three monitors hooked up to my PC
one 4:3 480i CRT
one 1080p Vertical Alignment panel
one 1440p lcd
I probably want to replace the 1440p with a 4k screen eventually but the usecase is pretty niche for anime because there's not much anime in 4k
>>287341398
I thought like that at first but you still get a sharper image with watching blu-rays on a 1080p monitor than you do with a 4k monitor because the pixels are bigger.
>>
>>287341620
I actually upscale certain games to 4k and they don't lose much fps at all. Having that option is good, but damn the laziness of devs these days, they straight up won't optimize at all anymore. If it runs, ship it and maybe later release performance patches.
As for anime, yeah 4k is a meme and useless, 1080p bluray rips look like they wouldn't lose much value if re-encoded to 900p.
>>

Sucking blood and fucking shotas
>>
4k is unironically great for looking at hi res art (like porn). Jacking off to a hi-res doujin you got off of sadpanda on a 4k screen is life changing. Once you seen such high fidelity asses tits and dicks the way they were supposed to be seen, you don't want to go back.
>>

I watch anime and play games on a crt, even 16:9 stuff
>>
>>287340003
>watch something on 4k.
>to notice the difference of 4k you need a 63 inches TV or bigger.
If you have a 21 or 32 inches "4k TV" you don't know the difference.

Is watching anime meant to be an effort?
I decided to do a side by side comparison, and it really does look better on lower resolution, top is 1440p and bottom is 4k.
>>
>>287348474
That depends on how far away from the screen you are.
I have a 24" 4k monitor and I can absolutely tell the difference because it's only 12" away from my eyes.

>>287340003
4k is still a meme. No reason to bother with it. I've have a 1080 LED TV hooked to a HTPC and just use mpv to play episodes on it. Looks good enough for me.

I already do.
Unfortunately a lot of anime is mastered in such a way that it looks low-contrast most of the time, so you don't even see true blacks.
>>
>>287349468
>I'm partially blind so it's a meme
get glasses you cripple

Japan needs to let go of the Porygon trauma
>>
>>287349544
>I enjoy shitty upscales on an overpriced meme
Sounds like a waste of money for an inferior experience.
>>
>>287340003
>>287340653
If anime is drawn and mastered on normal monitors (probably some run of the mill IPS), you're getting an inaccurate experience from OLED

Only appeal of OLED is low input lag + motion blur for gaming
>>
>>287345452
>bigger pixels = sharpness
I don't think that's how it works anon bigger pixels mean you lose sharpness not gain it
>>
>>287349554
They do lower the brightness whenever there's a flashing screen, but I'm not sure that's the reason.
It's just that the black isn't true black, but sometimes it is, it's a creative decision for sure.
I know it's not a matter of settings because I'm autistic about these things, I've configured the video player I ran test videos to confirm there's no colour banding, I have ICC profiles for my monitor and TV etc.
Same with the audio, there's just not a whole lot of bass in most anime. I think they've just optimised it for generic LCD TVs, because that's what most people will watch it on.
>>
>>287348779
>big black box
Well you found the first issue, 1440p is the wrong aspect ratio. But the second one is you're supposed to compare at the same size or appropriate distance. For example a 24" 1080p vs 24" 4k. But resolution is less important than lightning technology, QD-OLED or high dimming zone Miniled is going to infinitely better than other panels because you get real blacks, anime suffers a lot inaccurate color, those night skys with stars being grey instead of pitch black is a terrible experience
>>
I watch anime in OLEV
>>
>>287349621
pretty much, a shiton of cheap HD tvs are just 720p, you would be surprised, and most people that get a 4k never, ever watch anything beyond 720p or 1080p due to internet speed or streaming service shenanigans/price

and will never touch the options/settings

Maybe if they're watching on TVs from 2008 but these days it's getting hard to buy 1080p TVs, 4k is already dirt cheap, it's just OLED that's expensive.
Honestly it's understandable why most people don't want to touch the settings, managing colours and digital video is a rabbit hole of competing standards and autistic minutia.
The only advice I'd give to "normies" is to disable the soap opera effect on their TVs, go to lagom.nl/lcd-test/ for a settings sanity check and look up AVS HD 709 Color Clipping to confirm their player isn't crushing colours.
>>
>>287340003
I hear reports that some smart TVs won't allow you to access all the TV functions like even the ultra hd quality video output, without having a membership to some corporate commercial shit which constantly collects your personal data and spams you with targeted ads.
Fuck this gay earth I'm ready to give up all video displays all together. Saying goodbye to virus and movies
>>
>>287349772
Any examples so we know to avoid them
>>
>>287349772
I mean they're cheaper and most of the time they're not that aggressive or intrusive if you keep it offline.
>>
>>287349747
what? no they still sell a lot od misleading LCDs that say "HD" AND ARE ONLY 720p, had to stop my mother from falling for it
>>
>>287350079
Yes the 32" ones that cost less than 100 EUR.
>>
>>287349784
Lasy report I heard was mainly referring to Onn and Vizio brands.
I've never owned one of those and only ever seen them for sale at Walmart.
>>
>>287350111
I see. I've got a Hisense it works just fine offline, but Vidaa OS is annoying because it gets in the way and tries to steer you into using the "smart" features, to the point where it's a pain in the ass to switch between HDMI inputs.

if you're a heavy content watcher OLED is not the way to go. i downgraded from a 55" C1 and it's honestly better for SD content because you can actually get clean greys
>>
>>287340003
I use a 55-inch LCD from 2005, but it somehow gained a really noticeable number of dead pixels on the bottom right (as in, I can clearly see them from a reasonable distance, and longer subtitles are clipped) And new TVs cost too much and are all saddled with smart BS I will NEVER use so coping might be the best option
>>
>>287350436
>are all saddled with smart BS
Don't connect them to the internet.
>>
>>287350436
New TVs are cheaper than ever, astronomically better than in 2005.
>>
>>287350436
Just buy a new TV and don't connect it to the internet.
>>
>>287350448
>>287350464
>>287350538
I remembered hearing of some TVs that screw you over without internet connection but that might have been something different. Those QLED (I am not forking over for a 55" OLED) TVs look good otherwise
