Legendz got really popular in Japan for a short while. They had their own version of amiibos that you had to buy for the gba games and shit. Got its own manga and anime.

If it has to meet the levels of Pokemon to be considered popular (which is nearly impossible) then no, if it just has to have been popular by regular anime levels then Digimon and Yokai Watch were, and Digimon is still going to this day so arguably still is
