>>287356875It is kind of ironic to me that despite the series literally being named "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya", and despite the fact how that title is actually quite fitting for the first volume that it is named after, as from Haruhis speech to Kyon you can tell that she was quite melancholic in the past, and how this Melancholy motivated her to do everything she does in the series, she actually isnt the most melancholic character in the series itself, as that would be Yuki, to the point where Kyon literally called her a "lonely, MELANCHOLIC girl, so I have found it a little ironic in that regard, even if part of the reason why that is the case is because Yuki and Haruhi are parallels of one another, Haruhi is a normal girl that wants to be different from everyone else, whilst Yuki is a weird girl that wants to be like everyone else.
>>287369564I'd argue Yuki's deep introspection and, as you said, melancholy, goes a bit further than just wanting to be like others (you can tell she also grows and embraces herself as she is after Disappearance)That aside, I know it's called "Melancholy" thanks to S1 picking up the first book title and becoming the de facto title, but I think it's also quite appropriate because this series as a whole is deeply tied to this general sense of "melancholy" and passing time, in a way that goes beyond just how a single character feels at some point. You can tell it deeply resonates emotionally with the watchers, who are also left melancholic, but also with a renewed energy and will to take on the world with a clean and youthful mind.
>>287367830She started smiling, but kyon hasn't.
>>287369656She does embrace herself, but she definitely has grievances about her specific difficulties even post Disappearance, as she had this to say at the start of Surprise “I…” she began, her expressionless face transparently biting back the frustration she felt. “If as an individual I had been given social capabilities…” Her pale expression was infinitesimally close to blank. “The possibility of my gaining tools like Ryoko Asakura’s was not zero. I was not made that way. I cannot change my predefined index. Until I cease functioning, I will be… as… I am.”
>>287369729He was just tsun.Dissapearance was him accepting Haruhi and her weird world.
>>287356875If you want to get technical, the name of the series is "Haruhi Suzumiya Franchise", since only the first book is "Melancholy". The anime just called the whole show "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" to avoid a Monogatari situation where everyone is confused over which one is first.
>>287365117It may seem that way, but in truth it is just me posting a lot. I love my wife.
>>287372169Not just on /a/, even on X formerly Twitter. That said you have good taste...
>>287365117>>287372263Yuki has been the most popular character pretty much ever since the movie released, encapsulated by a Haruhi character poll in Japan a few years back where she received almost 2x the votes of Haruhi at #2.Which makes it even more frustrating how many times Ive seen people who think that alternate Yuki is her true self, just because they couldnt recognize her somewhat subtle personality traits, and thus come to this conclusion, when in reality alternate Yuki is how the original Yuki wished she was, emotionally expressive, paid attention to, and able to learn to overcome her social awkwardness instead of it being something that will always be a part of her, in other words alternate Yuki is the embodiment of the original Yukis wish to be normal and to be able to live a normal life, just like alternate Asakura is the embodiment of her wish to never be hurt ever again.
>>287368930Confess to Haruhi? Nah, I don't think so.
>>287367487There's something wrong here
>>287372502I agree alternate Yuki is deliberately "distorted" from what Yuki is even if she shows some of emotions Yuki also had deep down. I think it's a bit of both. But alternate Yuki being unable to take care of herself alone and barely functioning shows there's an issue here of course and indicates Yuki had personal problems to sort with this entire situation.

I honestly think that Koizumi is a worse character than Mikuru, because at least Mikuru has her future self, who is quite interesting, and makes her present self more interesting by proxy, as well as her fear of Nagato.Koizumi on the other hand is still doing the exact same schtick of “You dont know if Im telling truth and what I might be scheming, Im so mysterious” since the moment he appeared, and has literally done nothing but that all the way up to the most recent light novel.Sure his ramblings are fun to listen to, but thats mainly because its just Tanigawa sperging about various scientific and philosophical topics, meanwhile you get sick of Koizumis mannerisms after the 10th spiel, ie. by the end of Sigh. And its not like he doesnt have potential to be a good character, its just that Tanigawa never bothered to expand on what exactly the fucking hidden motives that are the entire appeal of the character are in 12 fucking novels.Like Nagato isnt a super complex character, but shes excellent because she was actually fleshed out through proper growth and development, especially if you take the anime into account with her microexpressions in Endles Eight and the rooftoop scene in Disappearance.
>>287374913Rather than S3 a remake would be better
>>287379394Elaborate.
>>287379394Fuck no, I dont want to wait 3 years minimum to finally get post Disappearance content animated, with a potential risk of it getting cancelled before that point. Not to mention how there is no need for a remake, the only reason I could think of would be them changing the Endless Eight by showing us the progression throughout the whole timeloop instead of just the last 100 loops, but thats far from needed, unlike season 3 which is absolutely needed.
>>287356875Rewatching it with my wife, already made it to episode 22. She absolutely hates Haruhi. I hope she will made it to the movie though.
>>287379541Endless 8 sucks

>>287378504Eeeh, I think his ramblings make him interesting on their own as part of his analytical attitude. He has his little bromance with Kyon too and you can tell he's having issues with his job and likes Haruhi but is still going for it.But yeah, if you're not willing to give Koizumi points for his speeches (which I am) then I can see why one would like Mikuru more.
Haruhi is easly top5 hottest anime girl designs
>>287380446She's iconic too!
>>287380420I found his speeches fun initially, but the more I read through the LNs, the more I began to find him stale and boring because he never did anything other than have these speeches. Also I think he is better than present Mikuru in isolation, its just that I find the stuff with future Mikuru interesting enough to where I find her more interesting in the sense of how she will eventually become future Mikuru.
When Haruhi says she wants to meet aliens, espers and timetravelers. Do you think at that moment the past of Yuki, Koizumi and Mikuru completely changed to fit this criteria? Like 1 second they were normal high school students and the next they became what Haruhi wanted?
>>287380626Nah. It was way before. She wanted aliens and stuff to exist way before she met Kyon.>>287380446Indeed!
Sex with Haruhi
>>287369502A question for the ages
How the fuck do people come away from Disappearance convinced that Yuki is emotionless, or is only just developing emotions, the literal fucking point of the beginning of the epiphany scene is how she has developed emotions which caused her to change the world as she wished for a normal life, and how guilty Kyon feels for not doing anything to help her despite noticing the changes within her.Have these people watched the same movie?Even worse are the 2 guys Ive seen who read the LNs, that claimed how Kyon actually asserted that interfaces and thus Nagato cant feel emotions like humans do, when the literal biggest difference between Kyons behavior pre and post Disappearance is how he is constantly keeping track of her emotional state, and has outright asserted how utterly human Yuki is, in contrast to the other interfaces.
why didn't kyon accept Yuki's world?

Felt like linking to the last major Haruhi thread we had a week ago: >>287181898 Its quite inspiring that Haruhi remains relevant to us, even after two decades.
>>287382452On some level you might be able to think Yuki is also developing emotions and experiences throughout the movie? Although I'm not really sharing that perspective, I also think it was all before and not so much during. The most significant scenes for Yuki, emotion-wise, are the "Thank you"s, and the second one is more significant than the first.>claimed how Kyon actually asserted that interfaces and thus Nagato cant feel emotions like humans doLmao that's just stupid.>>287383659You already do. >>287386640Too bad it had yaoiniggers and yuriniggers.
>>287387249No. They should've just done season 3 instead of this.
>>287387249I really liked it. Its only mistep was not being an actual spinoff of the canon timeline. You could totally rearrange the plot with that in mind, and it would instantly imrprove by having that context as an undercurrent. It ends up being too emotionally detached from the characters you already know, and the way that Nagato in particular is essentially just two new iterations of her existing personalities, but just different enough to be distinctly not the same characters is the most off putting thing about the show. Especially the original kuudere Nagato. It really seems like they brought her back for real at first, and that would've made an interesting plotline and added more weight to her departure. But as the arc progresses she doesn't quite behave the same, and it's clear this isn't like a glitch in her new world or anything. But for all that bitching, I really do enjoy the show, and think it's good despite all that.

KYON-KUNDENWA
>>287386871Its kind of obvious to me that the way alternate Yuki described her memory of the library is meant to be very similar to how original Yuki saw/felt about it as well, in particular the part about how she finds it difficult to talk to people/strangers, which is why that moment meant so much to her to where it would remain as the only memory she would keep from the original timeline, and why she would be moved by being reminded of it in the post credits scene. And this is an event that took place at the very beginning of the series, so I genuinely dont understand how people can see this, and still be convinced that she doesnt feel emotions like a human, the only way I could understand it is that because emotions arent natural/normal for her, her emotional experience must be completely alien if she were to have one, which to a human like myself for whom emotions have also been far from normal due to his alexithymia his whole life is just laughable and kind of insulting, both from a personal perspective, and from the perspective how the entire point of the movie from the perspective of Kyon and Nagatos relationship is how people like Nagato do have feelings, desires and needs, even if they dont express them in a "normal" way, and you shouldnt dismiss them, which means how they completely missed an entire half of what makes Disappearance a great story IMO.

Do we know if Yuki was a normal girl that got changed into an alien when Haruhi changes the universe, or did she just get willed into existence 3 years ago?
>>287393961Based on the description of the DITE and its organic data interfaces, I'd say the latter. Its why Yuki is often compared to Lain from Serial Experiments Lain: they are both data organisms that were manifested into existence. Neither of them had memories of a childhood or parents.
>>287394124It's possible that her memories got retconned during the change but that seems very unlikely now that I think about it
>>287393961>287393961>>287394124>>287394251I find it more interesting if she was created purely as a data interface, rather than her having been a normal (relatively) girl before being turned into a data interface with her memory rewritten, for the same reason why I prefer it if the data overmind and the other factions, aside from espers obviously, had existed prior to Haruhi unlocking her powers, because it makes the world feel bigger and more mystical, as opposed being essentially the equivalent of "it was just a dream" with none of the supernatural existing outside of Haruhis wishes. Also she wasnt exactly created 3 years ago, her individual existence began 3 years ago, but prior to that "she" existed as a part of the Data Overmind hivemind, this is what she described in Untitled 2, her short story, although obviously she had no sense of self/individuality as she was part of a hivemind. This is also why Asakura is able to come back in Suprise, as she was never actually deleted/destroyed as a data lifeform, but rather had her link to her data interface severed, and she even seems to have perhaps retained some of that individuality when she was back in the hivemind as she appears to have been observing things that were happening based upon what she said in Surprise.
