Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the first volume of Yashahime Princess Half-Demon. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Yashahime (or Inuyasha) after the dump.

Yashahime was initially created as an anime-only sequel to Inuyasha by Sunrise. The designs of the main cast were provided by Rumiko Takahashi. I have not watched or engaged with the anime and I likely never will. The manga adaptation was made after the first season and was written and drawn by Takashi Shiina, the creator of Ghost Sweeper Mikami and most likely the biggest Rumiko Takahashi fan in the world. As such, I decided to read and story time this series as well. My commentary will be sparse as I am completely new to the series, but I hope you enjoy the look into Shiina's take on the Inuyasha world.

I will be using the official localization of the manga by VIZ. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
>>
Cover is on the next page. And yeah, seems these volumes have color. Though the files I got don't seem to have the final volumes in it. We'll figure it out.

September 25th, 2021. Author's note:
"Please enjoy the comicalized version of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon!"

Furinkan appears to have made up the word comicalized. I assume Shiina is referring adapting it to manga.

Had to resize this one to post.
>>
>>287361229
I'm just going to post Furinkan's notes here:

"Shiina discusses one of the changes he made from the anime was that he believed Osamu Kirin seemed to be an English teacher in the anime, but he decided to have him quoting Japanese Waka poetry in the first few pages of the chapter instead.
The poem Kirin is quoting is Shin Kokin Wakashuu (New Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems/新古今和歌集) by Fujiwara no Teika (藤原定家). The poem references building a floating bridge within a dream, and Shiina said he wanted the question to evoke a feeling in readers as if asking if they would like to build a bridge back to the world of Inuyasha.
There is also a reference from Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji). The reference is a mention of the final chapter, chapter 54, entitled "Yume no Ukihashi" (夢浮橋), "The Bridge of Dreams."
Genji Monogatari was written sometime before 1021 CE making it the oldest novel in the world. Yashahime takes place towards the end of the Sengoku period in the early 1600s."

Osamu Kirin is this teacher here, I guess. I googled to check if this is a character from the original Inuyasha and got hit with a Yashahime spoiler. Whoops.
>>
>>287361287
>>
>>287361300
I didn't get the raws for this, so someone else can check how accurate "beyond epic" is. I assume it was just many variations of SUGOIII.
>>
>>287361349
>>
>>287361358
The writing does not seem to assume you're familiar with these characters already.
>>
>>287361395
>>
>>287361405
Furinkan mentions that: "Shiina wrote a blog post about his approach to the first chapter which can be read here." And then they link it. It is in Japanese.

I googled to check this one in case this was a St. Bacchus situation again and it wasn't. The original was 聖ガブリエル学院.

>>287361500
Honestly, even guessing that something was up, this is coming on a bit strong.
>>
>>287361513
Now we're getting into some nostalgic and fanservice type material.
>>
>>287361525
Furinkan mentions that: "Shiina also showed off two backgrounds that his assistants drew, the Bone-Eater Well and the Goshinboku Tree." referring to his twitter. Good job by the assistants.
>>
>>287361542
Buyo spotted. Also, some girl.
>>
>>287361558
Heh, classic. I do like the idea that her family never really learned much about her powers, it doesn't seem like something that would come up.
>>
>>287361578
Heh, the writing of a fan. Still, it does make me happy.
>>
>>287361606
So, yeah, should be pretty clear now. That's Kagome's little brother, Sota. All grown up. Looking at them side by side, it is funny to see his hairstyle stay the same as is typical in manga. I'll be honest, most of my memory of Sota comes from the Noh mask chapters but he did have a few other appearances.

You may notice these chapters are longer than most Rumiko Takahashi chapters. The series was published monthly and the whole volume has three chapters. Though I think these first chapters are extra long as later volumes have more chapters.

>>
>>287362026
Anyway, that's that.

Sota still being as interested is a little goofy, but it does make sense in the context of him having effectively lost a sister.

Is this shit going to end up like the anime? I dropped that shit in season 2 and still haven't finished it. Sesshsomoru is such an insufferable asshole and the lack of mohorah is awful. And character assassinating miroku was the last straw.
>>
>>287361104

>>287362541
I have no clue! I don't believe so, based on what people have told me, but I can not really vouch for the quality personally. I've only read this volume so far.

Heh, those faces in the bottom panels. Also, we got a Rumic gesture.

>Is this shit going to end up like the anime?
As someone that barely saw the anime and only knew the existence of this manga I can advocate for this; it's widely known as better than the anime.

Take it as you want.
>>
>>287362689
End of chapter. So, yeah, we're still in introductions but we got some nostalgia stuff going. And we got ourselves some plot brewing up. Fairly light-hearted and comedic so far, which I appreciate but will it continue that way?
>>
>>287361104
Shiina married Takahashi former assistant, so even outside of work I imagine their families are good friends
>>
Who are these two near identical ladies? Well, look at their minute hair differences that are somewhat obscured by the background. Oh, and I guess we only got color for the initial pages. This one was originally in full color in the magazine per Furinkan, but not here.

Also, Furinkan has a lot a lot of stuff summarized from Shiina's blog for this chapter but I think I'll post all of it in one after I finish the dump. Here's the link though: http://cnanews.asablo.jp/blog/2021/10/03/9429144

>>287362541
>>287362665

You can Compare it to the first episode of the Anime and you already can see early on why this is better than the Anime.
But is not a surprise Takashi Shiina, the creator of Ghost Sweeper Mikami and Zettai Karen Children is a good fun writer and it helps that he is a fan of Rumiko Takahashi, so he respects her characters A LOT!

I really want complete translation for Zettai Karen Children
>>
>>287362823
A bit more than a recap, since it has been a month.

>>287362797
"I really mean it when I say this work has changed my life.

Even without Rumiko Takahashi, I would be destined to be a manga artist, but maybe not. I would like to think that I would meet and marry my wife, even if Rumiko Takahashi wasn't there, but maybe that would have been impossible. For me, who was a real-time reader, Urusei Yatsura was the first book with a magical feeling that made me think I could live without anything else as long as I had manga (the second book like that for me is Maison Ikkoku by the way)."

Quote from the guy in the My Lum tribute stuff for the Urusei Yatsura reprints. I think he's drawn for every single one of these artist tributes. Also, he drew Rin-ne, Lum, Inuyasha, Ranma and Kyoko for the 200 million volumes tribute when most artists only did one character. He did something similar for the 35th Anniversary.
>>
>>287362833
>...but why?
Because we got an Inuyasha story time
>>
>>287362949
Yeah, same dialog and everything.

>>287362833

>>
>>287363207
A decision that many did not care for in the writing of the anime. I don't know where Shiina stands on this topic, but he couldn't really change it.
>>
>>287363240
I googled when tofu was introduced to Japan and it was significantly earlier than this. I guess it wasn't necessarily brought to this town.
>>
>>287363267
In case you never read Inuyasha.
>>
>>287363275
Fun to see Shiina redraw scenes.
>>
>>287363287
Definitely a choice in terms of framing here.
>>
>>287363294
Time flies.
>>
>>287363307
Kagome did use a casual "sit" command in Since Then so it isn't exactly crazy.
>>
>>287363327
Per Furinkan: "Later in a tweet, Shiina commented on the headband that Rin has on right after she gave birth to Towa and Setsuna. He stated that it is called a "sickness headband" (病鉢巻/yamai hachimaki), though he admits he is unsure if it was historically worn during childbirth or not."

Apparently, the original Yashahime anime kept the mother of the two girls a mystery for a while? Built it up into a reveal? Probably contributed to the reception, honestly.

Oh hey, Urusei Yatsura reference. I guess I should've caught the "Tomobiki Junior High" reference here: >>287361395

But yeah, Shiina loves everything Rumic not just Inuyasha. So, we get Lum, Shinobu and Soban (or simply the boss of the Butsumetsu High School gang). I don't actually recognize the other character pictured offhand. Surprised Furinkan didn't mention this.

Well, the audience for this work is relatively small here and I have no clue how Japan took it. I do know that this decision dominates the discussion of the series in the west though. Though it isn't the only issue with the writing (at least the initial writing in the anime) from what I've heard.

This is also a thing that is a point of contention regarding the writing of the Yashahime anime. Though, it is all a bit confusing to me at the moment. For a bit I thought Kaede said they were gone for only 3 years, but I guess it was 3 years until the Tree of Ages spoke up.

The Tree of Ages is a pretty blatant plot device but it isn't like Inuyasha didn't have plenty of those.
>>
>>287364036
>>
>>287364049
And which weak spots are those? I see you sliced an arm off, that seemed like it worked fine.
>>
>>287364087
I had to remind myself when the crow demon appeared. It was within the first couple of chapters of Inuyasha and effectively kicked off the plot. My memory is not the best.
>>

In case you didn't read Inuyasha or just forgot because it has been a million years.
>>
>>287363973
This is the thing with generational sequels. To make thing interesting for the new characters, you either have to make the OG characters bad parents or absent parents.
>>
>>287364124
So, this happened around three years after their departure.
>>
>>287364135
End of chapter! A time of war.
>>
>>287361683
Towa kind of looks like an insane axe murderer in every shot.
>>
This chapter cover is pretty cute actually. Rumiko Takahashi did the cover for this issue of Shonen Sunday S which depicted all these characters. Shiina redrew it for the chapter title cover.

And yeah, Furinkan has another long summary of Shiina's blog and thoughts. I'll post them after the dump so as to not overwhelm the story.

November 25th, 2021. Author's note:
"A secret of Inuyasha is that the corpse dancing bird had seven children in the mountain (laughs)."

Funny little tidbit justifying the appearance of so many crow demons in these chapters.

>>287364272
This appears to be a deviation from the anime as well. Also, look at that, it's Sango and Miroku.

>>287364129
Hence why I like Shiina's approach of "Think of it as its own thing". I mean, anyone who truly loves Inuyasha and considers it to be a complete work would say that. But yeah, the idea of them not being there is an undeniably frustrating one. Admittedly, if the anime didn't set up this sort of thing, you could've had them get separated around now rather than a decade earlier, but then you wouldn't have the new character learning the setting aspect. I'm not a writer, so I can't really say what would be best. I do think Shiina did what he could based on what I see with this first volume. Of course, maybe the rest are bad. I haven't read them..
>>
>>287364303
The fact that this isn't in the anime makes the way it is introduced even funnier to me, because yeah, this is nonsense. What are they talking about?

Furinkan interprets these as the Nothing-Woman from Inuyasha. Which I can sort of see. I imagine they must've used the same term in the original Japanese?
>>
>>287364964
Based on this note by Furinkan, it seems this conversation was localized heavily. For understandable reasons:

"and the Nothing Woman's interactions revolve around a Japanese superstition that clipping your nails at night (夜爪/yotsume/night nails) sounds similar to cutting away your life (世詰/yotsume/age cutting). In other words if you die prematurely you will not live to see your own parents death (which is the Japanese belief). " They link an article, but the site seems to have taken it down.

Oh and I missed a note here >>287364319 , also one that is a bit lost due to localization. "Setsuna states that she thinks "miso soup" was around them when she tried to explain things to Miroku and Sango as a child. The pun is difficult to convey in English. She is talking about the watchman (Ometsukeyaku/お目付け役) which sounds like "おみおつけ/omiotsuke" (miso soup)."

>>
>>287365285
Per Furinkan: "When Moroha asks Kaede to pay her for the massage the coin Kaede gives her is on a "piyo-piyo" background. This is a reference to Rumiko Takahashi's previous series Maison Ikkoku. Kaede also comments that asking for money is 可愛くない (kawaikunai/uncute/not cute). This is possibly a reference to Ranma's frequent insult to his fiancee Akane in Takahashi's Ranma 1/2."

Normally, I would say the latter is a stretch, but it is Shiina. Also, I googled it to double check, but it seems a mon was the smallest coin they had in terms of value.

Sota grew into a more interesting kid than I think Rumiko Takahashi would've written him as. It isn't a problem, just a thought.

No idea. New plot, I assume.

Furinkan caught this one: "In the flashback to Sota writing down semi-useful facts we can see he has a picture of Genma from Ranma 1/2 and a Dappya Man from Urusei Yatsura in his room." I was going to say that it is inaccurate to say the Dappya Man are from UY but then I realized that the half-fish guys didn't have sunglasses in Those Selfish Aliens.

I like the butterfly here.

End of chapter, end of volume. Thanks for reading! This is all new to me, I don't really know what I'm getting into here but I did enjoy this volume. It is pretty much what you'd expect a sequel series to Inuyasha to be if written by a fan. Lots of little nods and bits of nostalgia. But we'll see where it goes!

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Yashahime (or Inuyasha) related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be dumping volume 2 on Thursday. I hope to see you there.

Here are some of the the notes Furinkan had regarding the second chapter:

"Takahashi Shiina's blog is a wealth of information about his working process. On October 3, 2021 he wrote that he had completed the second chapter and discussed the process behind the "comicalize" (what he calls a manga adaptation of an anime, a process that is typically reversed as most anime is instead adapted from manga).

Shiina states that the feedback from fans was positive for the first chapter and that he feels the second chapter will be in that same vein. He said the third chapter will then set the tone and direction for the rest of the series. He says he is feeling a bit sensitive about everything so please praise him openly if you enjoy the series.

He says that "comicalize" (manga adaptations of anime) were common during his childhood in the days before VCRs and states that manga adaptations of of anime were the "only way to repeatedly immerse yourself in the world of the story of your favorite video content" at the time.

He also discusses times when the original author is involved in the "comicalize" adaptation of a series. He mentions Masked Rider, Devilman, Getter Robo and Sailor Moon as examples of such a situation.
Shiina then explains how he came to do Yashahime, "A manga artist who has a certain level of fame asked me to do this, then asked the rights-holder to consent. I then draw at my own discretion and the rights-holder checks the work afterwards. So perhaps it is something of a tribute?" Shiina then asks the reader if they would be interested in seeing Kazuhiro Fujita, Gosho Aoyama or Kenjiro Hata do their versions of Yashahime and states he would like to read their versions.

Shiina states that doing a series rather than just a short story is unusual but says it is quite similar to PLUTO (Naoki Urasawa's manga that adapted a storyline from Osamu Tezuka's Astroboy and greatly expanded upon it)."

Have to split it into two posts.
>>
>>287362823
>>287365541
Here's the other half:

"Takashi Shiina mentions the unusualness of beginning another on-going work so quickly after wrapping up a long-running project. His manga Zettai Karen Children ran from July 2005 - July 2021 (63 collected volumes) and by October he was already publishing Yashahime. He said sometimes things like up in a "strangely perfect way" as the second season of Yashahime's anime adaptation was scheduled to start and he was available since he was between work.

Shiina says it is easy to work with Rumiko Takahashi because a number of her staff are still the same from when his wife worked for Takahashi. Shiina's wife is Aya Shimizu and was an assistant to Rumiko Takahashi from Urusei Yatsura until Ranma 1/2.After she married Shiina around 1994 she became his assistant. Shiina goes on to explain that his editor also often speaks with Takahashi, so it is easy to make inquiries when he has questions about things.
Shiina says there is about a month between when he finished the first chapter and its publication and that he read over the chapter a dozen times between its publication. He read it so often that it no longer made sense to him and that he is sure he will do that again with the second chapter as well. He then states he is going to immediately begin the third chapter now." "

Furinkan notes that in this issue, Rumiko Takahashi judged a fanart contest. Here are the results.

Also, here is Furinkan's summary of one of the Shiina blog posts:

"In his blog posted on November 6, 2021, Takashi Shiina stated that he had finished the third chapter and that it would be 61 pages. He said with this chapter there should now be enough content to publish the first volume of his Yashahime adaptation around the beginning of 2022. He goes on to state that because he is used to working on a weekly series the amount of pages per month is roughly the same, though he is anxious for the series to be printed so he can get more feedback.
Shiina stated he wanted to limit his particular style somewhat and allow the opening and ending to match with the anime version.
He goes on to say he has been working very hard since beginning Yashahime and will slow down a little to have more time for his personal life after this chapter, estimating something along the lines of 50 pages per chapter going forward.
Shiina states that there are rumors he'll move the manga towards a lonelier/more isolated place after the conclusion of the second season of the anime. He goes on to state he might lose his own sense of self if he continues to do copyrighted work such as this for years and years so he wants to work as quickly as possible. However he points out it would take him years to adapt even just the first two seasons of the anime at the pace the manga is moving.
Finally he jokes that the ending of season two might be something in the vein of of Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon parody he calls "Hanyo no Tenshi Pretty Yashahime" where "Sessho Mask" shows up to help the girls when they have a difficult demon they cannot defeat. He jokingly says he'll talk to Rumiko Takahahsi about it and be scolded for suggesting it."

Other half of the notes.

"In his blog post of November 29, 2021, Takashi Shiina discussed his desire to deviate from the anime which depicted the manner in which Towa and Setsuna spent their early childhood living alone in a forest. He stated he felt that was very "fairytale-like" and he prefered to show a more tragic set of circumstances that would be akin to the way a child during the Sengoku era might have lived.
Shiina also stated that yokai would be frightening to humans, but when shown among their own kind they could be friendly and like family, stating he wanted the Unmother to be seen in this fashion as they raised the girls like "android nannies".
Regarding the change in Konton's appearance, Shiina said that Rumiko Takahashi had suggested he might want to make the villains more attractive, and so he decided to shave Konton's moustache and give him a more youthful appearance.
Shiina stated he badly wanted to show a "cool Jaken" in the prior chapter and said he thought of Jaken's voice actor, Cho, and his performance as Gilboa Sant in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn as the basis for some of the tone of Jaken's speech.
Shiina also stated that Towa's ending narration in the pervious chapter should be thought of in a similar fashion to such narration from Inuyasha and Yashahime. He stated, "please imagine "New Era" playing as you read this portion as this is how I imagined it."
Regarding Rin's appearance compared to her childhood self, Shiina stated he wanted her to look like an Edo period samurai's wife.
Shiina much later mentioned on Twitter an instance of his discussions with Rumiko Takahashi. "Incidentally, I ended the first volume of Yashahime with 'I will surely tell Aunt Kagome and Mr. Inuyasha.' I was so smug about it that Takahashi-sensei asked me, 'Don't you need this?' I was so proud that Takahashi-sensei asked me, 'Don't you need this?' I was like, 'We need it!' I didn't think she was interested in such meta expressions (laugh).""

Honestly I kind of love it too. The only thing that sucks is Inuyasha and Kagome not gettng to raise Moroha but thankfully unlike in the anime they get to watch her grow up
>>
The way I see it, the seethe about Yashahime has 3 main components:
1. Sessh and Rin are a couple
2. Inuyasha and Kagome are absent
3. Moroha isn't the main character

#1 is kinda understandable, but it's not like that sort of thing was rare in ancient times. Also I feel most of the seethe comes from women.
Seething about #2 is retarded. It's a sequel about new characters, they can't have the old MCs show up too much, as they are powerful enough to solve all the new problems.
#3 is also kinda understandable, but it's not like Moroha is a complete side character. She's just a bit less important than Towa and Setstuna, that's all
>>
>>287372614
Inuyasha and Kagome not raising them is frustrating though. Like, they can vanish after the story starts but...
>>
I'm gonna be real the manga kind of sucks. The art is really rough and the way it's paced feels bad. I've watched a lot of the anime and it felt fine to watch. I think this is one of those cases where people have just decided to hate the anime and therefore any alternative must be infinitely better to showcase just how "bad" the anime is.

>>
>>287372614
>The way I see it, the seethe about Yashahime has 3 main components:
Shut the fuck up. really, shut up, during teh whole anime you were coping and malding about how almost everybody in the universe realized the show was bad. Sessh and Rin wasn't even that bad, the fact the show routinely went back in circles and did NOTHING is a sin against cinema itself. Everyone told you the show was boring and the antagonist was forgettable. The three main characters get next to zero development and one of them having their memories erased wasn't just contrived, it was stupid and subtracted from the story. The things people wanted the show never delivered because of extremely obtuse storytelling cliches it never graduated from.

The Manga, on the other hand, at least had the decency to explain why things were happening the way they were instead of every episode introducing a new plot convenience. Why did Moroha and Setsuna forget everything that happened when they were young in the Manga? Because they were purposefully put someplace that was dreamlike and confusing for their protection. Why did it happen in the anime? Shut up, that's why.

And still, to this day, after everyone admits the show sucked, you're still coping about it. "Oh it's just because of sesshrin" meanwhile nobody mentions sesshrin, they mention how the show basically advertised several characters and then threw them in a fridge for 90% of it. Get bent. We're not having this again.
>>
>>287374321
>ave just decided to hate the anime
Yeah for no reason at all, right? The Manga's art beats the shit out of the Anime's art and the anime starts to decline in quality up until S2 where it becomes paper figures for any background shot.

It's the art direction, everything about it is superior in the Manga. Towa and Setsuna look like half-yokai and their yokai components are obviously supposed to be parts of their body, and Towa even looks bestial when she fights.
>>
>>287372614
Wrong, the main one I saw is that there is basically zero interaction with the modern world until the very end. Towa didn't even get to wear a real school uniform in the anime because of the insistence on this stupid suit being her canon look.

Ever go back and watch or read Inuyasha? They got back and forth from modern to past all of the time, and it presents interesting interactions with all the characters. In the show it's just sengoku until the last episodes of the last season and it sucks, because they clearly run out of ideas by the end of Season 1.

Do they really, though? Maybe my memory of the manga is fuzzy, but I don't think they do it that often in the grand scheme of things. Inuyasha only goes to the present like three times from what I recall, and I don't recall that many cases of them going on adventures when Kagome is abset, either.

Insane tbqh but worth it. That said I'm not really fond of modern Shiina's artstyle when it comes to faces; feels like a budget version of those hentai arts sometimes, that nitpick aside it's solid when it shines. Great even. I gotta say; it took massive balls to make a sequel with the children but making the child of the MC from the first work not only not the main character BUT the joke character; felt refreshing

Kinda ironic that Moroha not being the main character is one of the complaints many people have when it's something Rumiko specifically did NOT want. In her own words, Moroha wouldn't be as interesting as her parents, so making a sequel based on her would not be worth it.

On one hand, the anime was written as it aired, while the manga had the benefit of hindsight, so the latter probably contributed a lot to the manga being as good as it is, too.

On the other, I want to pull my hair out in frustration at how few people know the manga's story. The Inuyasha/Yashahime wiki barely even has any of the manga timeline's events detailed. It's maddening.
