It gives a recap of the OYW and general setting (especially the theatrical cut that pushes the prologue into one segment at the start) and lays out important elements like Char and the Zabis, newtypes, and the sort of hopeless Pyrrhic stalemate into which the war dissolves no matter who "wins." It sets up all sorts of interesting "callbacks" if you were to see Gqux first and then go watch through 79, zeta, and CCA without actually spoiling some of the twists. Like, you'd be going into 79's climatic battle thinking Char is in danger when it's actually Lalah who dies and there's a trippy scene even beyond what she did with Machu.You don't actually need to know any background material to understand what's happening in Gqux because the important points like the tension between newtype potential and how it's being used in war are explained to the audience and demonstrated at the core of the new era's storyline and characterization. The same for things like the complex social relationships with war as multiple episodes are dedicated to using veterans of the OYW in opposition to the girls who want to be free from war, including an extended sequence discussing how war and industry feed each other. In fact I think the only place where Gqux pulls its punches in a very un-Gundam way is depicting civilian casualties and the absolute ugliness of violence. Even with Nyaan's struggles as a refugee given a focus, we don't see the worst of it.
