To name some other "recent" popular shonen anime, Jujutsu and Dan da Dan both have strong first episodes.The most "shocking" part of ep 1 here is a girl going "gobble gobble", which was fun but didn't really have much impact.Funnily enough Atelier Totori also airing this season had a starting episode closer to FMA.I haven't read the manga but hopefully it picks up, so far it's quite slow.

It's weird seeing the popularity for Gabby after reading most of what's available for the manga so far. It's not like she's absent, she's a frequent appearing character, but she's got like, next to zero context besides being Asa's best friend and being considered a top threat in the Kagemori ranks, plus the story really keeps her out of focus since she's not an actual leading character and things are largely Yuru-group focused so the Kagemori Clan tend to fuck off besides one or two members for entire arcs.

And the major antagonists' motivation is a really bad case of this.
