I know Astro Boy was the backbone of Lies of P's inspirations, but I think the robotic frenzy that kicks off the game was inspired by this movie.
>>287433922I love the Japanese Old-cartoon/vintage style.
>>287434035There just something about this style that make the characters more charming
>>287434194
>>287433922shonen and shoujo anime took the ideas from the movie and ran wild with them.
>>287434781They what, gimme context
This movie got completely murdered by Spirited Away.
>>287434983Sad
>>287434194Other thing is like is the Atompunk stylehttps://youtu.be/tFpXI77sMW4?si=TIb232mMMd2VsIRW
It's excellent but it was released right at the time when the audiences were into edgier anime and this had a "cute" retro Tezuka style despite its themes. It was perceived as being not "serious" enough.I remember watching it at an animation festival and it didn't really click with anyone. The story is also a bit straightforward and lacks any kind of tension so you're just enjoying great animation really.
>>287435436Good thing we can revive it and praise the artstyle.Just like Atlantis and Treasure planet
>>287435436Well, the artstyle is gorgeous not gonna lie.
Bump
Imagine pretending to like this dated junk in 2026. Tezuka's rubber hose style is hideous and Rintaro is the king of style over substance directors who can't tell a coherent story to save his life. It is impossible to take the themes seriously when every character looks like they belong in a pre-school picture book. The movie did not get "murdered" by Spirited Away, it just sucked. Miyazaki makes actual films while this is just a high budget tech demo for an art style that died for a reason. Mentioning this and Lies of P in the same sentence is an insult to actual game design. You are all just patrician larping because you are bored of whatever is on Crunchyroll this week. This is a commercial failure for a reason and no amount of "atompunk" cope will make it a good movie.
>>287436204it was a fun movie and really neat to look at. it succeeded on that aspect alone.
>>287436204
>>287433922This movie LOOKS awesome but I remember thinking the story was a bit genericWhich is okay since at least it wasn't bad and you could appreciate the style.
>>287436818This
>>287433922the sheer amount of references that can't be understood because tezuka's manga is largely untranslated and unread by western audiences is sad.
>>287434194She's cute
>>287436204>style over substance
>>287437691Yeah, but honestly i rather this movie than the nonsense of PlutoLike come on, they are Robots, no soul, no thoughts, why they act like people if they are empty machines. In Lies of P they have sense because they are animated with Ergo (some kind of Soul)
>>287436167Mecha bump
Empty head
>>287433922>I know Astro Boy was the backbone of Lies of P's inspirations, pinocchio lol
>>287435669Love how they combined art deco with this bright, kinda playground aesthetic using that color palette. Don't think I've seen them mixed like this before.
>>287438636In pinnochio there's not an entire race of robots (living wooden puppets) who are hated by human
>>287438712I think this makes the City feels more "alive"?
>>287438104how you watch Pluto and have it completely fly over your head that the whole story revolves around a phenomenon of robots achieving personhood and genuine internal emotionseven in the manga the whole thing was a dark Pinocchio story with Dr Tenma failing to realize the fake son he'd created was a real boy capable of experiencing love and suffering and not just some chatgpt automaton
>>287438766There's a number of factors that make the city feel more alive, main thing that stands out to me is the extra layer of grunge and weathering you can see on top of all the bright colors, it really makes the buildings feel like they've existed in that space for some time now. From what I remember there's also always a ton of people/movement during these establishing shots as well as signs and storefronts everywhere. Also falabel
>>287438803And why they didn't tried to fix that phenomena?
>>287438915You can refresch your memory here.>>287435385But yeah, there's a lot of characters and they don't stop moving.
>>287437923Yeah
>>287437691>tezuka's manga is largely untranslatedthe vast majority of his work is translated in English, though a good chunk of it is scanlation
>>287436204>Tezuka's rubber hose style is hideousStopped reading there
I love this movie but this thread reads like zoomers talking about something a youtuber recommended them with a video titled "THE GREATEST ANIME YOU NEVER HEARD ABOUT" or some other clickbait bullshit along those lines
>>287434194You know something I've wondered for a long time is just how effectively Metropolis nailed down Tezuka's art even when by 2001 it was considered ''old''. We don't really see this sort of stylistic movie productions with old styles done in new productions, at least I can't recall a single one since Metropolis.
