What happened to good ol' shounen battle series where it's just like some underground tournament to the death and 2 dudes with crazy powers are dukin' it out on a big ol' stone squares arena, potentially with spectators and an announcer like yu yu hakusho and the flame of recca.Why doesn't anyone make one of those again?I miss them.

>>287439912In Japan, the Kouga Ninja Scrolls novel is generally considered the originator of modern "tournament shonen". It's a VERY popular Japanese novel series from the 60s. The plot of the first book is that two ninja clans decide to finally end their decades-long fued by having a ninja tournament to decide the strongest clan. Then the whole rest of the book is exactly what you'd expect. If you're familiar with the anime Basilisk, it's a loose adaption of that book.Those books are also VERY dark and edgy. The ones I've read were loaded with gore and occult shit. Angst and "darkness" are kind of baked into the genre.

>>287443496i dunno but my best guess is imitation without understanding, older shows did have camera tracking shots too but they were used for a specific effectwith time new animatiors probably wanted to copy it and did a shoddy job, then another person saw that and copied the shoddier version and made it even shoddier, etc. etc. the process evolved with more and more new people copying it and went more and more off base with each new iteration getting crazier and crazier until we ended up with the bastardized inbred generation 10 of it where it's now super spastic and all over the place
