My only idea is one where the main character is in a fight while an ally is fighting as well in an obscured background. Then they do a fake out where it seems that the ally lost and the side enemy is coming in to help defeat the main, crushing defeat style. But it's revealed the ally won and is there to back up the main character. The best examples I can think of that aren't exactly the case would be in Jojo part 3 where Polnareff patches himself up offscreen and jumps into the Dio fight to save Jotaro's life or Kongou Banchou where the monk guy resists a sleeping whistle or whatever put on his party offscreen and shows up to fight an assassin about to kill everyone.
