When you translate English to Japanese, you do use faithful translations to keep the actual meaning of true English culture right, like:
>私はお風呂を持っている
>私は自分の二個の手で貴方に払わせる。
>彼が私に彼の愛を声明した
>私は血まみれによく彼に払わせる。
>私は心理的に準備されていない

You are being faithful right? You're not producing a filthy localization right?

>"Well, MD it is"
I don't even know why I thought of changing.
>>
>>287538589
There's a reason why even when the site completely died for a year, even when they purged thousands of titles, even when it's clearly circling the drain it's still the central hub for scanlations. It has the least amount of hassle for both scanlators and readers. All competitors have either spammed ads and compressed images, thrown up too many secret club hurdles for uploaders, or died to server costs + DMCAs. It won't last forever but at this rate I think we're more likely to regress to individual scanlator sites again than the current generation get their shit together and make a better hub.
>>
>>287538589
as long as it's possible to upload to mangadex, that's just the easiest. the aggregators scrape it so it's available everywhere else seconds afterwards
since you can still upload chapters of nuked series, it's probably safe as long as you use a vpn. mangadex added some new rules to throw you under the bus if they get sued, so don't leave any traces
>>
>>287538730
>the current generation get their shit together and make a better hub.
considering how both comick and weebdex failed miserably, I don't really think there's going to be another scanlation hub after mangadex dies
>>
>>287538753
Funny thing is I realized it wasn't nuked. It didn't have the "show unavailable chapters" button that the nuked series have, so it was probably removed by the guy that did them. So really I was hesitant for nothing.

I've yet to complete a full scanlation project so take this from the perspective of a newcomer.
You need to fiddle around with a few installs to get Calibre but from what I've seen, Rakuten Kobo is the best option. It's still on the cheap side and easy to de-DRM with Calibre.
If you just care about reading then Honto seems to be dirt cheap but the only de-DRM tool that I found that's easily accessible for its infrastructure limits you to only rip 3 books before it paywalls you.
>>
>>287540979
nothing, they'll have to send a dmca of those chapters

>>287542575
kobo is the easiest, but they might shut down their desktop app any time
>>
>>287543110
Yeah, but do they get deleted automatically or quickly by some faggot mod? Does Mangadex ban you if you upload lots of chapters for such series?
>>
I wish I had a drawfag drawing all of my series together.

>>
>>287535730
there is nothing more reddit than saying scanlating when you mean translating
>>
Translating gag manga is a path to ruin. Especially 4komas. Especially pun-heavy or reference-heavy 4komas.
>>
>>287545323
Speaking of, not sure about what exactly is the preferred method of doing TL notes, particularly for more in-depth cultural references.
I've always tended to prefer just a page at the back that lists out all the TL notes since a lot of the interesting cultural/linguistic notes can't easily fit into margins and going into details on some linguistic nuance that you may have already translated around could interrupt the flow. Or there could be chapters that are just super heavy on culturally related things.
>>
>>287546332
If there's so many things you need to add notes on you're better off not translating it in the first place.
>>
>>287546379
Not speaking about things like required notes, I mean things like if they have a throwaway detail of a reference to a real life Japanese store chain or you're choosing a Romanization for an organization title or in-universe TV show and explaining why you went with the one you did, or if there's just the occasional joke that relies on knowledge of Japanese culture.
"Page at the back" is my preferred method since it lets you just make a normal translation but include the notes for the people who like to see part of the creative process, or if they see something like characters talking about some shared cultural knowledge so instead of either rewriting the dialogue or assuming that the reader knows, you put a note for people who might be curious.
>>
>>287540979
nothing, some scanlator even re-uploaded their nuked chapters and nothing happened. I assume they'd only get removed if mangadex receive a takedown for the reuploaded chap
>>
>>287540173
No.
Now license 7 more BLs and 3 isekais.
>>
>>287546726
>>287546332
I don't include TL notes for references unless it's something that a non-Japanese reader would never know, or something that's vital to understanding what's being said.

If it's general pop culture, you either get it or you don't.

When translating shiritori, do you guys just made up bullshit word chains, or do you keep the original Japanese words and add the translation notes?

Apple -> Ebony

>>
Is it hard to find a typesetter that also edits the script(or what scannies call proofreading)?
>>
>>287557581
Having been on both sides of the situation, typesetters don't want to overstep their boundaries. Translators are deified in scanlation communities and offending one is basically the end of any given project. Just make it clear the typesetter is allowed to make any edits they think make it flow better. So long as they're a native speaker they can do the job.
>>
>>287556650
>As a translator you are responsible for getting readers to buy it.
I've added links to buy the volumes to my credits for five years, but I can't say it's done much.
I'm a little dissappointed that the enthusiasts side side of the community has more or less dissappeared completely. Now people just want to read for free, refuse to buy and support, and just say that they wouldn't read it in the first place if they had to pay for it.
Honestly with that low interest they should just find something else to do.
>>
>>287558475
Love Bullet managed to get saved by translation readers but that was one and a half years ago and it didn't manage to change the general attitudes.
>>
>>287557581
Unless you agreed with them to do it beforehand they will probably do their job and that's it, either from laziness or to avoid over-stepping their boundaries.
>>
>>287558475
I don't know about that. I'd call myself an entusiast, I buy manga I really like, both in physical and digital, I buy merch from time to time, but there are still series I follow on mangadex just because they're there. Someone's translating them and putting them in a place where they're convenient to read, so I'll read them, but paying for them or even having to go to some DRM-ridden website to read them for free would be too much.

I probably inadvertently dropped some series when Mangadex got thep urge and I haven't really felt like checking. If I liked it enough, I remembered it.
>>
>>287558475
I do the same. I can't buy them so I just hope that readers will. I don't think I'm making a noticable change though, but that's all I can do really. You can count the times a scanlation's contribution actually helped the survival of a series on one hand.
I think part of it is ignorance. People don't know how to support so they end up not doing it. But reluctance, either by choice or not, is the biggest reason.

>>287557581
Well you seperate the role. Typeset only responsible for type layout, sfx and such. They should consult that decision if they think it didn't fit the buble or produces terrible type.
Checking your script (and your produced manga so it can be error free as possible) should be given to a PR. Well, having a PR that understands Japanese is a bonus as they tend to check not just English grammar, but its coherency with source text. Basically you'll let your main translator fight with your proofreader if you don't have a lick of Japanese knowlegde.

Been a while since I've been here but I got a new PC and have been getting back into TLing stuff here and there. Thing is I've been getting hit with the non-licensed product warning on Photoshop on several cracks and it just kills itself.
Are cracks getting shittier or is Adobe just better at cracking down on pirated software nowadays? I haven't had this issue before but I did pirate the newer PS versions (2023/26) on this new PC.
Do you guys just stick with the old PS versions for this reason or is there a better crack I should be looking for? I think the fills are much better on the newer versions (though it might just be placebo) so it'd be a shame to lose that.
>>
>>287565723

>Do you guys just stick with the old PS versions for this reason or is there a better crack I should be looking for?

If I want to make a tool that streamlines the scanlation processes in a way that people can easily work out of order or check if the same term was used 40 chapters ago (for example: option to establish a source text/transcription, translating with a TM/glossary and typesetting before proper cleaning and redrawing, higher quality raws/background layers can be easily pasted in when obtained later), how much can I hope to leave out of Adobe's grasp? I'm trying to avoid doing it all in a UXP Photoshop plugin
>>
File: grim.png (25 KB, 678x292)
25 KB PNG
>>287569949
There is no need to reinvent the wheel with plugins.
My process is something like:

I write the translation with just an image viewer and a basic text editor.
(irfanview + npp in windows and gedit + qimgv in troonix)
All cleaning and redrawing (very little redrawing though) is done in photoshop with no plugins at all.
And for the typesetting stage I use Typesetbuddy, it lets you keep notes or a glossary/index of styles/names after the END# tag, which is super useful if your text editor has autocomplete.
The underscores at the beginning of styles are just a personal choice to make the autocomplete function work better for me, you can name your styles whatever you want.

All three tasks can be done in any order, but I usually leave typesetting for last because I hate it even when 90% of the work is automated thanks to the plugin.

There's several orders of magnitude more manga than anime, several orders of magnitude more scanlation groups than fansub groups, and literal dozens of orders of magnitude more untranslated manga than unsubbed anime.
