I've read part of the manga and then dropped it. Not because it was bad or anything, at least not where I stopped, but I had higher priorities at the time. I'm going to watch this show and then pick up the manga again. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is one of my favorite anime of all times.

But one would've hoped that the anime wouldn't play it straight and gave us actual performances. It makes the anime way too noisy and obnoxious to follow along.
I will say that this feels like a huge waste of potential, especially because the VAs are all very great and I'm also sure very capable of delivering nuanced rakugo performances. Not to beat a dead horse, but Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu had Studio Deen delivering precisely that on a reasonably tight budget, and despite not having 1/10 of the animation of Akane-Banashi, it delivers 10 times the emotion. It needn't be this way.
Can someone spoil me the manga for me? Why Issho expelled Shinta and the rest of the gang? Is it for a really gay reason like Shinta not being traditional enough or something?

You're overselling the amount of ukiyo-e panels, there are performances where they're a very minor part. Rather than the ukiyo-e, what detracts from the rakugoness is that a lot of panels only show parts of the body or face to convey tone, direct the reader's attention, or just add some variety. That's a matter of how comics work. The audience reactions and rakugo analysis do take up a lot of space, but that's the Jump standard when it comes to everything in the "tournament" genre, from battle shonen to non-sport spokon like Shokugeki. When was the last time they had two characters fight without a bunch of commentary?

I am a fan of the manga and I know that the anime has a low budget yet I feel like it’s a waste. They could have made use of their low budget to make it look more original.
