In 1985, Mangaka Masami Yuki (you may know him for being involved in the Patlabor franchise and also doing the manga for it) would start publication of a manga about a high school teenager and a space police officer being forced to share the same body after circumstances and having to work together to stop an intergalactic terrorist. Sadly, this would amount to a single volume that would later be adapted and expanded into 4 OVAs. Despite said ova telling a satisfying story, it’s main plot would remain unsolved.A decade later, in 2002, the author would come back to this concept and fully explore it a manga that lasted 20 volumes and a sequel of 13 that lasted 10 years combined. This manga was later adapted into a 25 episodes tv show. And once again, despite closing the two story arcs told in said show, it would end teasing more to come that never did. The manga, ironically, would end up being the most expansive version of this story. Sadly, it was never published in English, so it remained a missing piece for the longest of times. That changed a couple years ago thanks to the effort of at least 7 scanlation groups. Even the sequel manga, Evolution, is slowly getting to completion, and if the update rate of the current scanlator is to be trusted, we can expect it to be done the end of the year. So, at the risk of jinxing it or rushing, I’m going to start storytiming the remake manga, Birdy the Mighty, every Saturday from now on, hoping once we reach the end, the whole story will be completed. So without further ado, let us begin this story of two hearts in one body. https://youtu.be/9-01piZuA6o

I love Birdy.I love the original manga.I love the OVA.I love Decode. But the remake manga kind of pisses me off. It has easily the least likeable versions of Birdy and Tsutomu (they made her a retard and him a jerk, and you don't really see the friendship between them that was so crucial in all the other incarnations form until Evolution), and Birdy herself gets sidelined too often in what should be her series (even by pointless storylines about Tsutomu's social life). I like that it tries to have a more ambitious story, but sometimes it feels like it falls under the weight of its own plot and crushes what should be the core of the narrative. If Birdy had been smarter and Tsutomu more relatable like their other incarnations, and both of them weren't constantly brushed to the corner for the sake of featuring countless irrelevant side characters for the sake of cumbersome world building, I'd like it more.

Did anybody ever track down the article that said Birdy was an inspiration for Samus Aran? The original manga came out a year before the first Metroid game, so the timeline adds up.
Will be reading closely
>>287539249Damn, we should do the patlabor manga next

Still waiting for Tubi or Retrocrush or some other service to get the license for the OVA.
>>287539750>>287539765Nice work killing that innocent bystander! Is this our hero?!
>>287544001Decode handled this scene so much better. Birdy realized her mistake and spends the rest of the season feeling guilty about it and trying to make up for it, even suggesting that she should just let her consciousness die so Tsutomu can have the body, and that's the beginning of her and Tsutomu's friendship, and it comes to a head in the last episode when Tsutomu willing allows himself to be killed so Birdy doesn't have to die. Here she's just a dumb, violent meat head who tries to cover it up.
>>287542239Thank you for posting!
>>287539670an ordinary italian?
>>287547517Well, she turned Tsutomu into spaghetti.
OVA > Decode > Manga
>>287540884You know, I thought Tuto would stick around a bit longer in this version but he ended up getting killed off even earlier
>>287544313I hope thatll lead to some interesting development for both of them esp since tsutomu is being outright antagonistic to their efforts despite it being the best chance of protecting his family.
>>287539947The way her outfit exposes her whole side like that is so fucking hot and I can’t find many other designs like it.
