Lain and Haibane Renmei are superior.

They're all siblings. Don't pit them against each other. The enemies are the moeslop, shounenslop, isekaislop and anything else anti-intellectual.

If you're going to mention siblings you might as well mention NieA_7. It literally shares much of Lain's production crew and, like Haibane Renmei, it was aBe's own story.

I am halfway through Wolf's Rain and it kinda feels like shounenized Texhnolyzed.
>dark haired, blue eyed emo protag (I really like his design, very handsome no homo)
>existentialist. touches on freedom, dignity, dreams vs reality
>post apocalyptic
>beige dusty cities
>weird, otherwordly, quiet girl the protagonist is fixated on
>blonde science woman
>extravagant upper class with advanced technology
But both came out in 2003. It's not nearly as cool and unique as Texhnolyze, but still kinda neat. Some characters can be tedious and it suffers from recurring, hamfisted melodrama that seems to lead nowhere.

It is a handling of what actually makes us human, and if we were to make all the human imperfections bygone, how much of humanity would actually be gone with those imperfections?
What is the main human imperfection? The accursed knowledge that we are going to die someday.
The people on the surface segregated all the violent human tendencies into Lux. But with those tendencies, everything that drives humanity forward has also faded away since progress is usually violent the surface now exists in an absolute, unmoving stasis. Nothing ever progresses, everything is in an idyllic curtain of apathy. Because why would they care? They achieved the Elysian-tier society, and their souls dissolved into it.
On the other hand, there is Kano and his autism. He doesn't want to eradicate violence, he wants to take texhnolyzation into it's apex. Replace so much of a human body in order to achieve functional immortality. Behold Plato, the ubermensch: shape carcass budding into and undying tree hybrid. The design is very human.
And above all that is Ichise. By the end of the show he is basically the only living human left and is about to die. Everyone else is either dead, an apathy ghost, or a shape flagpole.
In his last conversation with Ran, she basically tells him that the strife for survival, the perpetual forward motion of humankind with all its atrocities and faults, is what life is. The only achievable way we would stop killing, abusing, and mistreating each other is if we would stop being human altogether.
By the way, this is also what Yoshii tried to do. Shake Lux and the surface up. Pin everyone against each other.
That's my reading at least. Honestly, would have been an incredible show if it were a bit tighter. A lot of episodes are not working for the theme the show clearly tried to exhibit.

It doesn't have a single 'theme' besides being broadly existentialist. Yes it does say "violence is a fact of life and keeps things rolling" but you don't need an entire anime to hammer that.
The flesh of the show are it's characters and how they pass through their lives, how they impact each other. What they make of their limited time. Ichise is reborn at the beginning, you observe his entire lifetime.

>It doesn't have a single 'theme'
It has a main one. The parallel between the surface and Lux is very blatant, and this is what the finale leads towards to.
>but you don't need an entire anime to hammer that.
And it doesn't, I'd argue only like the last 5 episodes run with this. Most of anime just meanders. A lot of characters have no purpose.
Oonishi despite probably being the second largest screen time character, just has nothing to do with the end plot.
>Ichise is reborn at the beginning, you observe his entire lifetime.
Yeah, like some kind of strife for survival that makes a human. The opposite of its absence is an eerie ghost and bug shape trees. You can dismiss my reading, but to pretend that it was a character variety piece is silly. It was clearly trying to say something about compromises of human metamorphosis if we were to ever reach the immortality stage. What do you think the title means? It's not "Boyz in the Lux."

The layer of existentialism overlaid itself with a layer of soul-crushing despair is the show's main intellectual axis.

It just ultimately answers the questions of existentialism in the most depressing way possible but does so in a manner that is a work of art.
