how do you decide whether you should read or watch a series for the first time? I feel like I almost always get this wrong. For example I watched AOT and Death Note and then read Demon Slayer and JJK. and after seeing the other side of those I feel like I made the wrong choice on all 4 of them. You only get to experience something for the first time once so I feel like its an important choice.
>>
You should always do both. When you read something it's like experiencing it for the first time again because you get to see the original vision of the work. At least that's how it feels to me
But I always like to watch something first and then read it and I usually end up enjoying the manga more

Foppery and whim.

Watch the first episode and then read the first chapter and compare. Or just pick one and stick with it it doesn't matter.

Only time you should watch an anime first is if it's an anime original like NGE or Bebop. The original is better 99% of the time. Also I dont think JJK and Demon Slayer anime is better than the manga, it just looks flashier and impresses the normies. But there's more to a good series than flashy animation.

Neither are good series, so.

OP doesn't share your taste so why bother with your worthless reply?

This
Always read the manga first. Animes tend to cut or rearrange content to fit the medium, have voice acting that can be hit or miss and generally don't respect the original art style.

The only exception I can think of is houseki no kuni where the anime actually helps onboarding casuals like me by giving them a more concrete image of the world (and then you continue reading the manga because the story is good and there's only one season)

Everything you stated in this is truth. I agree with all of it.
Do you care to recommend a story? Anime manga western novel I don't care. You seem very wise

Why not read the Eva manga first, the way it was originally released? The Bebop manga seems like a side note at best.
Would you really watch an anime afterwards?

Of Mice and Men, John Steinback, its less than 100 pages. Powerful, honest and masterful storytelling. If you've read that already, then read The Pearl by the same author.

huh, I actually had no idea the eva manga actually released first. But it's still an adaptation and not the original work. I need to check it though.

The general rule is, watch what came first
If the manga came first and the anime is an adaption of it, read the manga
If the anime came first, watch the anime
In oldschool media there can be some exceptions though, since they tend to change the anime quite a bit from the source material in tone and story. Like Sailor Moon and Trigun. Not saying the manga are bad, but just so different that it might as well be a different story

Thank you never read Steinbeck before

It happens in recent years as well. Kemonomichi anime and Kemonomichi manga went rather different ways.
