I'm coming into this from the anime. How much of an injustice did I do this by describing it to a curious friend as being a sports manga/anime about the cutthroat world of traditional Japanese standup comedy?

Kaisei has to lose for plot reasons. I reread the manga recently and I'm sure of it. Since he has the winner flag of going second, it will probably be a replay of the Renseikai, and he’s going to have a realization while onstage that throws him off his game. This way we also get a callback to when he told Akane off for the same thing.
Issho is going to blow a fuse about Akane using her Rakugoverse Bankai, though. While it's always gone well for her so I don't think it affects her chance at winning, mixing stories was a specialty of the previous Shiguma. I guess it would be funny if Issho has to deal with one of his most promising students dredging up bad memories while the other one flubs his performance because of feelings. There's no way to ruin his day any worse than that.

One thing I've learned from this Manga is that Rakugo isn't as comedy-exclusive as I thought. There are horror stories and dramas too.

It's very japanese.
Cutting out all the fluff of a theathre act as much as possible untill it is literally just a dude sitting on stage telling a story.
With everything cutdown down to the bone the only thing on display is the storyteller's skill.
Or that is how I think they view it.
