I think I'm going to drop this after all. The author clearly doesn't know how to actually progress the plot and the editor is actively sabotaging any chance it has of being successful by trying to get him to re-tread MHA and Fairy Tail plot points. The character designs are also very lackluster and no amount of characterization will fix that.
