Aikatsu Stars... so underrated
I love AiPri, but for some reason I get the impression Himitsu is a show you just had to be there for the weekly releases to sort of understand the magic of it? Which is why I'm dying to see people talk about their experience of watching it, dunno if that makes sense.
>>287575625It's structurally made to be specifically good watching weekly instead of rushing in or batching episodes. Partly because of the Himitsu gimmick being about making a "buzz" and trying to understand things from outside the show itself, since half of it was spread offscreen. If you track back a bit, you're going to notice some lives were scheduled at same time than recaps. Just like a way to make it easier for people to just not watch the episode in that day and come to the live instead. The other part is because the pacing is dogshit because of arcade updates and Tomy strategy.
>>287575625The appeal of HimiPri is pretty universal, Katsupara’s director and the animator who did Onegai’s ED caught up with watching it recently and have been gushing about what they liked about it.

OG Aikatsu was better but it has nothing in particular that stands out for me, I like those Akari and Sumire girls and I could watch and enjoy it just for them, but as I understand it they only appear after a cast swap 100+ episodes in? and I just wouldn't enjoy forcing myself to watch those 100 eps until they are the MCs nor would I like to just skip them all. Most new ainons will come due to Aipri, and Himitsu had a very different feel than Pripara or Aikatsu, so it is not reasonable to expect them to finish 200 ep shows that are very different from the one they like.

>>287578116>>287578183It's kind of interesting that you were both hooked from the start, it took like 10 episodes or whatever it is until the start of the Mii netorilu arc for me to get on board. With the gift of hindsight it's now obvious that the intro episodes being like that were done to establish the "initial" characterization for the cast before starting to subvert them for the himitsu personality theme, but at the time those initial episodes just didn't grab me at all. I'd probably enjoy em now on a rewatch though, it'd be amusing seeing Himari and Mii act strangely normal while knowing just how weird both of them actually ended up being.
>>287578301As a long time Yakuza, I've recognized how deceiving the first episodes tend to be and that the shows always develops in a different direction than their first appearance, Rainbow Live is the most extreme example of this but even something as subtle as Prichan goes through similar changes. What makes the beginning of AiPri so special (Onegai included) is how quickly they've speedrun the world building and arcade mechanics explanations to setup the character hooks, it makes it pretty clear that they have a more important story to tell that they want to get all the formalities out of the way to get to the heart of it ASAP.

>>287576394Honestly I can sympathize since I've probably seen less of Pretty/Aikatsu than every other ainon besides you (I love Pripara and like OGKatsu though). But this isn't as unexpected as ainon makes it sound by his reaction. Though I am surprised you saw Pripara and didn't enjoy it while enjoying AiPri. What was the appeal of HimiPri to you that you think Pripara lacked?
>>287578783im not that anon but i dont think its that weird for a theoretical someone to like aipri and not necessarily like pripara since theyre different genres of showsfor example if someone was not a fan of slapstick comedy but was really into yuri drama then boom theyd instantly fit that profile
>>287578783>On the elite side I've seen a bunch of people who got into Pretty through Waccha or AiPri and haven't seen Pripara to this day. I mean, in bigger communities like /pc/ you see this as well, there's a bunch of newfags watching the current season but haven't seen the classics yet. With giant franchises it gets more and more unreasonable to expect everybody to have watched everything... But I still believe that at least an attempt to watch older shows should be made? Like sure you don't need to watch ALL of Showa, Heisei and Reiwa Kamen Rider, but at least try to watch the ones that you see people talking about, even if you never get the platinum trophy achievment there's still a lot to enjoy.

>>287578301i tend to pick up on things via atmosphere and the like pretty quickly, i can taste generally/vaguely how something will go early on based on initial setup, and i'm pretty confident as to where i'll enjoy something for this reasonfor instance i was iffy about princession early and thought it was good, but not great, and it turned out that way as welland so far onegai aipri, meitantei precure, and lulutto lilly are all phenomenal to me. the only one i am worried about here is meitantei, because precure tends to have strong starts then flounder in the 3rd cour and never really recover, but it remains to be seen>>287578854i agree with this and this is part of why i want to hear more from the horse's mouthpripara is, honestly, overhyped as fuck. it does a lot well and it is amazing, i love it dearly and as my first /ai/ show (unless you want to count ppgz lol) it means a lot to me, and i think it embodies a lot of the spirit of pretty series well, but there is so much it does poorly and most of that is the fact that it tries to be a comedy more than it tries to be a drama and it delves too deep into that often. it makes it popular with people that don't really care about kodomomuke because 3everyone likes funny stuff, and pripara IS funny, but there are many people who don't care for that and i'd say i'm one of them after the dust has settled. it's still amazing, though, but over time i find myself thinking it's still amazing *even though* it has such a focus on comedy, whereas for say, my preferred show, prichan, i do not find myself needing to specify that, it is simply amazingi think it may be that ainon may be more interested in rainbow live or pretty rhythm in general, and potentially prichan (maybe?) than he'd be into pripara or aikatsu because of this
Looks like we're getting everyone straight away this time!
Do people really say the first 10 episodes of Aikatsu are hard to get through? I'm at episode 5 and I've been enjoying myself. Ichigo is really cute and the OP is so good.
>>287579165Early Aikatsu eps are a bit subdued, I think it gets more energetic after the start.
>>287579165I think the opposite, I love those first few episodes a lot. It's a lot of fun to see Ichigo ganbatteru at the very start of her career. One of my favorite episodes is the one about her first fan.

>>287577155Extremely cute and canon. weirdly shaped shadow though
>>287578951I generally am eager to agree that Pripara is overhyped, specifically past S1 (honestly hated Geddons at first even) and especially Idol Time (S3 funnily enough used to be appropriately ranked at the time). But this is bollocks.Personally, I like human drama way more than I like comedies, even if I like both. Subdued human drama might be my favourite even. My favourite Pretty Series shows are Aurora Dream, PriPara S1 and PriChan S1. On the paper, HimiPri was pretty much made for me.But honestly, it is lowkey trash. It treats a bunch of its characters without needed care, it's too predictable, it can't handle relationships of more than two people at a time and properly involving more of the cast in the overarching plot other than in the most lazy way possible. I feel like a huge jerk writing this, but it's honestly baffling to me at how much people are willing to forgive for a crumb of yuribait and omoi onna memes. I can't say that it's all bad and I've seen worse shows aplenty, but it is easily the most overhyped Pretty Series entry. >>287581516>This is the first time I've ever seen someone agree with me on this.NTA, my subjective view is that Pripara reached the comedy peak in S2.S1 is too slow and just starting to introduce most gags, in S3 a few things start to few a bit old, but S2 in specific is this sweet spot that goes above and beyond with funnier moments and subverts most of the gags introduced earlier, also there's simply more characters around interacting in weird and funny ways. That ainon already said he prefers drama so I get why a few people would say S1 is their favorite, most of its main plots are "loveable dramas" (like the Sophy's introduction arc, Falulu's arc or the Laala's mom subplot, they're more like tearjerkers that are hard to find any fault), in comparison S2 is a bit more soap opera with Hibiki causing chaos all around but honestly? I love the chaos, I think the chaos is the most fun part of Pripara and the comedy in S2 is so sharp and amusing that it even compensates for a few of the flaws as well, it's my favorite season.

>>287583800>Elites were celebrating AiPri breaking Pripara's records simply because it'd shut them up about it (it didn't).It's really interesting because AiPri turned out to be "literally Pripara but slighty different" as their strategy for ensuring the success even if anything else fails. The new Producer even said to Director something along the lines of "if this doesn't end being a success, so nothing else will." on the topic of returning to the basics. So in a sense, AiPri was designed perfectly to not fail. It's the sheer accumulation of the experiences they got until that point. While Pripara was huh... made to completely fuck over and kill Aikatsu.

>>287577991>>287578783What I liked about AiPri was how it handled relationships between characters; there is a palpable tension in all of their relationships caused by the asymmetrical investment each party has in the relationship; and, despite being so close, the characters often are afraid to express their fears and worries to their partner, creating a close yet distant relationship, all of which makes the every day interactions they have and the drama more compelling; this results in the characters feeling very realistically human and alive despite the inherent absurd nature of the anime archetypes they follow. Hence, AiPri's main focus is relationship drama, which is what I loved, though the overarching mysteries also kept me hooked and I really liked Himari and Tsumugi. On the other hand, Pripara is centered on comedy; the characters are more one-note and absurd and the friction between them is mostly played for laughs, which is fine and got me through 30 or so episodes, but I'm just not interested enough to keep watching. I found Aikatsu to be excellent; it goes deep into many aspects of idol life to elaborate on the effort and self-improvement needed to become a top idol, I really like how it often shows the complexity of it by having the episode's protagonist follow a wrong perception of what she has to accomplish only to then fail and realize the truth (when Ichigo learned signatures for example), but after 30 episodes I feel I've had my fill and am satisfied enough; there is no specific character that strikes my fancy nor an overarching plot that I want to see concluded. I will keep Aikatsu in my hard drive though, and I might keep watching it slowly in breaks between seasons.
>>287585042>spoiler Is this true? Is that why once I finish the Aikatsu shows there's nothing to look forward to?
>>287585320>but after 30 episodes I feel I've had my fill and am satisfied enoughShould have kept going for another 20 episodes at least.
>>287585076http://taaboustoybox.blog76.fc2.com/blog-entry-801.htmlainon misinterpreted director-san's blog post about AiPri, but Pripara being made in response to accusing Aikatsu of plagiarism is well documented publicly and in Hishida's little red book (Boss calling Aikatsu the enemy Gundam while calling Pretty Rhythm his Zaku and Pripara his Hyaku Shiki still makes me laugh). Uncle Tomy and Hishida always used harsher language about it like calling it "the war without honor" (a reference to some Japanese films), but it's really always been more of a friendly rivalry like HaradaP and OhbaP have said in interviews because the majority love both series equally and hardline partisans who only like one over the other are the minority.
