What's this like frieren mixed with atelier games?
Do magic circles need to be in a flat surface? Could I roll them, put them inside a tube and activate them? For example air would only allow air to escape through the tube open end.

I think I figured out a way to improve the flying shoes. Since you can direct the stream by drawing asymmetric circles then draw a magic circle in each inner side of the shoe. Each magic circle is incomplete. By joining both feet together you activate both and get a strong push, strategically places lines on the sides allow you to activate only one circle or the other to allow some form of control. Part of the burst will also push the feet away from each other so a light tap will only produce a short burst but firmly holding the feet together will produce a continuous stream. Gloves with incomplete magic circles activated by specific gestures (finger with ink complete the circle) allow for fine tuning of the flight. Also since it needs magical ink the design could be hidden by drawing it over a surface painted with regular ink.

I caught up with the series over the weekend. Under its whimsical premise, I find its world to be incredibly dystopian. It is hard to create a direct analogue, but imagine if a group of elites brainwashed the masses into believing that only they can use and control guns and nukes in an effort to prevent another world war. And they are portrayed as the good guys, despite controlling the means of power, having a tight grip on society, and choosing who they let into their circle. Does the manga question this at all? Coco's glider could easily have gotten her killed and if you drew the sigil on the wrong thing, you could topple a building. The issue is that it is also as easy as we see. Coco is a prodigy, but even a dullard can learn the basics of casting in a few days. This means that once people know about magic, there's little that you can do to limit its usage that isn't reliant on authoritarianism. I think, the thing that made Harry Potter work was the contrast between the modern world and the magical world, which made the latter feel special and captivating. That distinction is absent in WHA, which started in a world that already felt fantastical. It doesn't help that the magic, while certainly unique in its own way, also suffers from the 'seen that already' syndrome. So it is hard to feel the same awe that Coco is feeling.

I feel like the production is showing signs of sloppiness in the artwork and background details sooner than expected. The next episode is apparently going to be the best one so far, but the fact that the final trailer didn't show any scenes beyond the fifth episode is concerning.
