I've been reading manga and watching anime long enough that I've made spreadsheets to track all that I've consumed. I'm happy that I care enough about the media to catalog it like that, but there's also a creeping anxiety I feel.
>will I ever finish all this stuff?
There are also lost artifacts; content that I consumed before I started tracking it as I do now. I'd have to hunt it down and figure out where I'd left off, or just start fresh from scratch. To some extent, I get that with manga that I'm currently reading. I'll reach the end of an ongoing series and say-
>"I'll take a break from this and wait for the author to pump out some more chapters before I come at this again."
And I'll return having completely forgotten plot-centric details and have to re-read the whole thing over again. (looking at you Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun).
>post your spreadsheet faggot!
I can if you want me to. I'm missing a lot of stuff.
>You haven't watched that series!?
I have, but I never wrote it down. I've seen all of Outlaw Star when I was a kid. I don't need to write that down. Not to mention all the shows I watched before I started tracking them.
>>
I just use anilist
>>
Do you even track oneshots and guest series?
I just remember the magazine issues I read. There's way too much manga to track every single title.

For me personally there's no point anymore. I spent a year automatically auditing my backlogs and reduced them all to zero (95% of the series I dropped once I realized they weren't worth it after trying them).
And there's no point in keeping a list of things to try later. I just try one thing now and forget the rest on purpose.
And there's no point in finishing "everything" you have in mind.

>one shots
That reminds me, there was this one manga about this "ugly" girl who got proposed to, and she couldn't accept it. It was really wholesome. I didn't track one. In cases like those, I feel like you have to spread the word if you think it's worth reading.
>>287579446
That's probably what I should do. With color coding and sorting options in spreadsheets, I can see which series are dead/complete, so I can more easily filter out what stuff I need to move on to. I have that particular brand of autism where I prefer to finish stuff I start, even if I don't absolutely love it, because I have to know how it ends.

That's the reason I've stuck with WataMote for as long as I have. I loved the series when Tomoko was a socially retarded sperg who continually fucked up and alienated herself because she was such an autist, and then they gave her a bunch of normie friends and the "charm" of the series was lost, but I keep reading it anyway because I HAVE to know how it ends.
>>
I don't track anything except bookmarks on manga sites. I'll just leave it up to fate for if I lose track of or rediscover a series I previously read.
A hobby that you should enjoy shouldn't be giving you fomo and anxiety.
>>
Personally, I think once you start making "To Do" lists and documenting things you haven't done yet, you've lost sight of why you're watching anime in the first place: Presumably, to have fun.

Life is so stressful already, why are you trying to put pressure on yourself in your hobby too? Just watch what you feel like watching at the moment, and if ypu never naturally go back to the old stuff, you probably didn't really care about finishing it anyway.

Because there's some things that are worth considering perhaps? Having fun isn't exactly all there is to it. There's newfound experiences and stuff you can learn where real life shrouds them from you one way or another.

>I'll just leave it up to fate, for if I lose track of or rediscover a series I previously read.
I lost a lot of content I was tracking with a similar attitude. You're a braver man than me

Anime is a little easier because even 3 or 4 seasons you can knock out in a weekend-long binge session or two. Manga is trickier. Like for "Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun" I really liked that series, but hit the end of it and came back after a long hiatus. I forgot all the important parts of the plot. I have several manga like that I'm currently enjoying. There's so much good art and interesting stories. I feel blessed to live in a time where there's such an abundance. Stuff like "THE ISEKAI DOCTOR Any sufficiently advanced medical science is indistinguishable from magic".
With a title like that, you'd expect some bland slop style, but the art goes way harder than it has any right to, and the story has me by the nuts. A more popular work like Centuria is the same deal. A bold and eye-catching art style with a killer story, but you hardly see anyone talking about it outside weeb circles, even though it has one of the best muscle mommies on offer. Then there's really goofy shit like
>Dragon Yashinatte Kudasai
or
>Time Stop Brave
These series aren't amazing, but the premise grabs me, and I'm like "what kinda goofy shit am I going to see next?" And there's lots of little series like that.

>automatically auditing
Shit I meant to say autistically auditing.

I don't even remember where I got that panel from. I didn't even know what WT was until I searched "manga Katori"
>matrix
Better than Discord. Sadly, I'm actually dancing around in some other fandoms at the moment, along with keeping up with meatspace friendship bullshit. Good luck. Not enough hours in the day for new friends, it feels like.

Also, I tend to bully nerds, so I'd nuke your whole group for sure.

>if ypu never naturally go back to the old stuff, you probably didn't really care about finishing it anyway
there are a few series that i tried to pick up at one time, but couldnt get into them
then i came back and enjoyed them in full
GuP for example

I make folders with all needed info for ongoing series, and then anything finished goes into a plain .txt file. Never really liked spreadsheets.

I feel the same.
I wish I'd started using MAL back when I got into anime/manga.
By the time the thought even crossed my mind, I'd already watched and read more than I could even remember.
I guess if I can't remember something, then it's not even worth remembering, but if someone mentions something I've watched/read, I at least remember it then.
And I feel like having a good range of series to reference scores for would be valuable for talking about them.
>>
>>287579631
There are manga I want to read but can't right away. I put them on my wishlist so I can buy the volumes when they are on sale and then read them when I find time. Eventually I'll catch up after a new volume comes out.
>>
before I suggest MAL (contrarian urge), why is everyone into anilist lately? is it better?
>>
>>287579631
The purpose of tracking series is a quick reference point wherewith to refresh ones memory, that you may speak authoritatively on a subject.
>>
>>287581044
I still use anidb. Less focus on social aspects and voting and more information that I want.
>>
>>287580001
Okay, well thank you for the response!
Tally ho bully anon.

If the anxiety feels like it's causing a negative impact on your life please look into hoarding disorder. Anxiety disorders are pretty treatable, the main issue is just whether you stick with the treatment long enough. There are also treatments that focus on harm reduction rather than aiming to completely remove the behavior.
