Just finished reading Golden Kamuy.>most of the heroes and villains got satisfying character arcs. >clever setups, payoffs and twists>pacing was excellent (no filler arcs or padding)>art was consistently good>fights were memorable and cleanly choreographed>the manga has a distinct character artstyle, yet it still had varied character faces (and very expressive too)>knows how to do humor without overdoing it or killing the seriousness of the plot>everything to do with its Ainu subject matter was thoroughly researched (apparently the writer even took a few weeks off of making chapters to do more research)>it had a really good ending>even the anime adaptation is apparently solid (not a masterpiece, but still good from what I've heard)Why isn't it talked about more often here? Lots of lesser modern manga get daily threads, yet GK is lucky to even get one thread per week.
We talked about it when the anime aired years ago.
>>287581027It's too perfect so there's nothing left to debate.
>>287581027>Why isn't it talked about more often here?because it flash-bombs you with random gay shit because the author was a Jojo assistant or something.
>>287581064Are there any interviews with Satoru Noda where he talks about how much (or how little) planning went into the story?Because I feel like he had to have planned most of the major plot details years in advance to have come up with so many amazing and layered resolutions. I would really be surprised if it turned out that he improvised the major story beats as he went along.
>>287581027I love Golden Kamuy but even in Japan it seems to be popular moslty among middle aged women.Besides the obvious yaoi pandering, which I don't mind, there is something about realistic pre WWI period aesthetic that doesn't have mass appeal.Asirpa is also in a weird age where she is not sexualized as a 14-16 year old could be but she is not a full on cute loli to be protected either. Sugimoto can't really romance Asirpa so it loses a lot of generic shonen apeal.
>daily threadsDoes he even know lmao? GK was daily dumped a couple of years ago for a whole year before the final seasonhttps://desuarchive.org/a/search/subject/Daily%20golden%20kamuy/
>>287581160I specifically was making comparisons to manga with controversial endings like SNK and CSM that still get daily threads despite the fact that they already ended and despite the fact that most of the contents of these threads is just trolling, shitposting and schizo nonsense. Yet here's GK, a manga with an objectively good ending, and yet it gets much less talk than these manga with shit endings. >>287581127It's bizarre that it doesn't have mass appeal considering that:1. The manga is filled with traditionally cool characters that would fit right in a shonen manga, like Sugimoto, Ushiyama and Hijikata. 2. The pre-WW1 period in Japan is still filled with samurai swords and guns. Who doesn't like that shit?3. The yaoi pandering was barely even like 4-5 percent of the entire manga. There's a sauna scene, a hot springs scene, the whole sumo wrestling innuendo, and a few more. Again, I just finished reading it and I can barely remember all of them, because the gay moments get far overshadowed by all the amazing shit in the manga.
>>287581236Look foward to dogs red threads
>>287581027I found most of it "satisfying" yes but it was pretty flat and boring in some critical places (like the ending). In trying to be too perfect it lacked any huge spikes in the later half. I'd rather read a "shitty" shonen manga with one super amazing moment than a flawless golden kamuy again.Ofc no one could rate golden kamuy less than a 6/10, and even below 8/10 would be quite strange.
>>287581236Another thing I forgot to mention is that the author is a major history buff so he puts references not many people can get. Hijikata's character is hit or miss since it's obvious he is an old samurai but not many people know the story of the Shinsengumi. Noda also doesn't bother explaining it much so you end up with characters that fall a bit flat without the proper context. The amount of characters is also a detriment for a big final arc. Having tons of characters that need an ending means you end up rushing them in a few chapters while readers are waiting for their favourite character's turn.
>>287581236You shouldn't take all those shonen generals as a norm, they're just a daycare for kids and genuine retards and not the place of honest discussion. Instead of questioning why GK doesn't get frequent threads filled with ritualposting, image dumps and resident schizos, you should be thankful it doesn't.Also, I gotta say that GK would've gotten a lot more traction if the anime didn't drop the ball so hard with a poor first impression and the following messy production.
>>287581236>The pre-WW1 period in Japan is still filled with samurai swords and guns. Who doesn't like that shit? It's Imperial Japan which was an insanely popular setting for both anime back in the 90s but is less vogue now due to anti-colonial attitudes across the globe. Korea, China does not like Japan romanticizing the time when Japan ruled those 2 nations (in China case, Manchuria). The most recent anime in that setting was Kimetsu no Yaiba, but it was apolitical and didn't interact with the government at all hardly. Golden Kamuy is different. Both the Victorian/Edwardian England and Meiji/Taisho Japan have seen huge nosedives in depiction
>this gay porn has an amazing story bro trust me
Did Golden Kamuy even get its final season anime? It was delayed by covid for like 5 years. The inconsistent production killed sustained interest.
>>287581460They left the train battle for the next winter which most likely will be a movie or OVA
Maybe imperial japan just unpopular?Like this is before ww2, but still.
>>287581050>years agodidn't it finish like last season?
>>287581027when the manga was still coming out it was talked about a lot. There are plenty of /a/nons that will tell you it was one of if not the best manga of its decade.
>>287581027their 'humorous' faces were very try hard actuallythe trivia came off as r/iamverysmartasirpanipal and not-wolverine's drive could not make up for their weak pudding of a goal. i simply could not get invested in what they're trying to accomplish. granpa bushitdo was a little too cool for his fiery bushitdo bullshit.it was tiring to watch not lenin do big brain shit only to job at the last minute everytime
>>287581781WHO HURT YOU
>>287581236because its filled with shippers and shitposters, what is there to ship or talk shit about when sugimoto and asiripa are end game? there aren't a whole lot of female characters except for tanagakis fox waifu (cute). noone cares about a bunch of gay dead dudes.onk threads were even worse with the shipping, i like good theories and 99% of those threads were absolute cesspools of mindless shit. good thing its over.
>>287581440>Victorian/Edwardian EnglandI think that's seen a huge jump in popularity in the past decade or so, but it also looks like they often dodge the subject of colonialism. Either they never talk about it at all, or they cope by making the cast super diverse.Women like looking at pretty dresses and Victorian culture, so that isn't going away any time soon. However, they can't really use the aesthetic without including products of Britain's overseas dealings, like Chinese folding fans. Artistic movements like Japonisme and Chinoiserie were popular at the time because Europeans were infatuated with East Asia. Not sure if they cared about Korea at all though.
>>287581027It is too good to talk about. Too well made for people to bitch at one another all day.
Why would you want an actually good series to be constantly posted about on /a/?
>>287581027>fujo fanbase>great mangaMost series that get discussion here are shit or airing. All the monogatari or eva threads are discussions of what girl is the most fuckable. Also good series with majority female fanbase arent discussed here that much, i see like 2 nana threads a year.
>>287582613Not OP, but I bet it's a misguided attempt to fix the board.
OP I just hope you read the fan translation that not only reads better but also has little informational snippets at the end of each chapter regarding the shit referenced. Also is posting manga screenshots still a bannable offense? I've gotten some 3 days for posting reaction images from the manga but that was years ago.
>>287581027It's been a favorite of mine for awhile. It's kind of what anime and most modern media on a whole has forgotten to be. Entertaining and charming with some substance to chew on.
>>287581122All I know is that:>Noda was a guy living in Hokkaido>His first "big" serialization was a manga about a hockey in Hokkaido>People thought it was weird, but kinda funny>It was axed due to low ratings>He decides to make manga about the Ainu in Hokkaido>It basically becomes one of Japan's greatest national works, receives dozens of various cultural manga awards from around the world, revives and makes the whole generation of people interested in Ainu culture (and overall history of Japan of that time), the empty Ainu museums are now full of visitors, Hokkaido tourism is booming>Also did you know that there was a new documentary about Ainu, but it was so poorly made that people said you should read GK instead as it was more accurate?>So, what did Noda do after GK?>He returned to his true dream, and currently remaking his previous hockey mangaWhat a story of life this guy has.
>>287583160Love me hockeySimple as
>>287581236It is because it is good that there aren't constant threads. People make SNK threads because there's a ton of bad blood to keep spilling.Golden Kamuy is too high quality for people to say much more than, "damn, that was a good manga".
