>[BD Remux]
>>
>>287589854
Yeah, 2D animation in general is a medium that doesn't really benefit from high bitrates (or even high resolution)
Unless you're incredibly autistic about preserving film grain in cel-animation
>>
>>287590052
They also have a ton of flaws that requires fixing: a 2-3gb encode will looks better than 6-7gb remux.

Remuxes are great for archival purpose, because a full BD season is like 500$ in japan and 120$ in the US if its OOP, otherwise its only 50$
>>
>>287591210
For archival? Oh, absolutely, specially since it gives future encoders a better source to start from
>>
>>287591392
Yep. Only cost around 5$ to keep one anime season in its remux version on a HDD lol

Seriously, i'm still wondering how they manage to even sell 1k units of those in japan, must be either hardcore collectors or rich guys. Some animes don't really need a BD tho, like One Piece because there isn't even ghosting or animation improvement, and the Crunchyroll bitrate is good enough desu
>>
>>287589854
That's a really high resolution image, shami.

Probably what you said + nip government is harsher on piracy so it's more convenient to get the BD
>>
>>287591675
Yeah p2p is pretty dangerous for them i heard, but still there is a decent chunk that buy the dvd (which are only 10% cheaper, what a ripoff) so i would like to think its more collector that only want to own the show

They started reverse importing their stuff too, i mean i would rather get a USBD for 50$ despite it having slightly more banding and less bitrate, than a 600$ BD ...
>>
>>287591727
Eh, I'd argue that anime (2d animation as a whole, but that's beyond the scope of this board) doesn't really benefit from FHD that much, but yeah, there should be more of a price difference.
On that note, I do find it weird you can still get a lot of western live action stuff on DVD, but official western releases of anime are BD only. I managed to snatch Initial D First Stage on DVD for 20 dollars new, but it seems it was old Funimation stock because now it's only used listings for like 200 bucks. Shame because I was like "I'll get the 2nd stage+3rd stage+extra stage set later" and now that's also gone
>>
>>287589854
>[Coalgirls]
>>
>>287591859
Yep but there is no ghosting and fixed drawing which is a big plus. For One Piece its useless tho

Yep since COVID everything that goes OOP does a x10. Manipulated sells (fake ones), shill bidding, dumb collector and wealthy people means that a 20$ trash item can be worth 500$ within a few weeks. Fairy Tail Collection 12 for some reason is worth 200$, the UK version (same packaging, just diff region) is worth 20$, yet the first one is selling 4-5 time a month

Yeah no thanks you i will keep buying HDDs

The group essentially died back in 2016 but still, I truly miss fansubbing.

why are BD's in Japan 5x more expensive than US BD's anyways?

That's not as silly as it might seem, in cases where they lost the OG film, but have the digital scan, but they scanned at 480p, it means you get the series in 480p but at a higher bitrate and in h264 (instead of an even older codec)
In cases where all that remains is the OG video conversion, they usually at least made that a higher bitrate than DVD and then re-encoded for the BD-release
If all they have is the same files that went on the DVD release, then yeah, the only people who're gonna see an advantage are people buying the actual disc, who now only have to worry about 1-2 discs instead of 10-20

You don't need to be "incredibly autistic" to be honest, a bit goes a long way and decent filesizes make a big difference if the source material is good. 1GB per episode of Conan Netflix remasters was enough to make it world changing levels of improvement over any other version out there up to that point, every single frame is stupidly good, most backgrounds are earth shatteringly beautiful, they seem like little early Monets.

All subtitles that are English should be tagged EN, and yes there's gonna be at least two in dual audio releases. Don't tell me you use JA tag for regular en subtitles...

You can buy it but it might cost you and arm and a leg

The problem is that you are competing with "well off kids" and desperate collectors: did you know the OVTG artbook is going for 400-600$? it used to be 30$ retail for years. That is because the fanbase is retarded and will spend this amount just to get 40 upvote on the subreddit

For your average dude, spending more than 10x time the price on an item simply because "lol they don't produce it anymore since 1 week so it must be worth gold" is retarded. I will just pirate it and call it a day
>>
>>287600091
Fair point, but some people go overboard (See: The dude on Nyaa who made three Berserk releases, smallest one being 30 GB)
>>287602200
Yeah, I know, but 200 dollars is beyond my "random bullshit I might buy on a whim" budget, might look into seeing if the UK ver is cheaper but I think I'll be happy I got to buy First Stage
>>
>>287604100
Are you american? It seems like people are wealthier than european so "rarer" stuff cost more: eg Emerald is like 200$ but the UK english version is half the price ...

Personally I re-grain every BD release to simulate that crispy look of ye olde shows. It increases the filesize to 100+ gigs per episode but, heh, it's worth it. Really puts me above those seasonal watching plebeians.

Since we're talking about our own encodes: I regularly do 240p 512 kbps MPEG-4 encodes of 4:3 anime to watch on a 3" phone

I used to pay for CR because I was too lazy to set up RSS autodownload and didn't want to torrent manually, then some anon explained how easy it was and I didn't renew (I'd buy three months and cancel as soon as I signed up because there's usually only 2-3 shows I like every other season)

Yeah its too blurry, there is a middle ground. People will tell you its because you don't like the aesthetic but most older anime were sharper than actual ones, despite having ton of grain and a lower resolutions

Top one for instance looks like Dragon Ball Kai , which looks even blurrier than the Dragon Ball Z dvd lmao
