It’s more a matter of how the show very unsubtly tells you that Mikuru is the “wrong” option and Kyon has to pick Haruhi over her regardless of his feelings about them. If you like Mikuru, the series itself is poison to you. A similar phenomenon could be seen in Hataraku Maou-sama, where people loved Chiho when the anime was new, but avoided the series after learning of the heavy pushing of Emi right after where the anime ended. Ironically, it actually went back on it and let Chiho win in the end, but just ended up disappointing both sides.

Throughout the series, you can see that Kyon, even though he’s in love with Haruhi, wouldn’t have a problem getting into a relationship with Mikuru, Nagato, or any other girl who confessed to him. In fact, he even thought that might happen when Asakura, Asahina, and even Nagato asked to talk to him alone.

Yes, the first arc is pretty much all about him liking Mikuru and being pissed off by Haruhi, but having to give up on Mikuru and kiss Haruhi so the world doesn’t get sent to the cornfield. Yuki had Disappearance to make her feel like a legitimate alternate option, but Mikuru is deliberately sidelined and treated like an absurd parody of the kind of girl that was popular with otaku in the 90s-very early 00s, since there was a huge push in the industry to disenfranchise otaku-pandering moe girls in favor of tsunderes and similar extroverts in the 00s.

Please, expand on that, i just see a shy clumsy girl in Mikuru, not even a dere archetype.

>there was a huge push in the industry to disenfranchise otaku-pandering moe girls in favor of tsunderes.

Isn't Mikuru just as Haruhi said the "moe bait" (i can't believe that moe girls were already a cliche in 2006).
And isn't Nagato a kudere archetype?

>shy clumsy girl in Mikuru, not even a dere archetype.
Shy girls are known as hajidere, and they were pretty much the very origin of the concept of moe (which was a pun on having a burning, i.e moeru, passion for the shy Hotaru Tomoe from Sailor Moon). Sailor Mercury was huge in Japan as well for similar reasons, for example, and the burgeoning galge industry loved having its heroines be shy girls and sweet childhood friends. However, the influence of Love Hina caused a huge surge of tsundere-focused series in the 00s where girls like that were set up to lose as the main rival of the tsundere or even character assassinated as yanderes.
>Isn't Mikuru just as Haruhi said the "moe bait" (i can't believe that moe girls were already a cliche in 2006).
Exactly. Haruhi treated Mikuru's character type as something cliche and for the audience not to take seriously, even though all of the main characters are deliberately based on cliches from the early 00s (Haruhi's the plot-armored tsundere except with literal god powers to explain why the world literally revolves around her feelings, Yuki's the Rei clone, Koizumi's the fujobait, and so on). If the audience was meant to like Mikuru, Haruhi would become the villain of the series, so she's deliberately relegated to being a joke character who can't do anything.

The tsundere personality type itself is way older than Asuka (girls rebuking guys with slapstick violence and girls not being honest about their feelings are ancient, but Akane from Ranma is probably one of the first anime girls who fits the description of a tsundere perfectly), but Asuka was more seen as a boisterous Western girl with issues in the 90s since the term tsundere hadn't become a thing yet. Love Hina took Takahashi's story premises (it's basically just Maison Ikkoku if Akane replaced Kyoko, all of the tenants were girls and the university entrance exam plotline was dragged out for way longer) and wrote it from the perspective of a man who was into girls like Akane instead of the clear self-insert female power fantasy of Takahashi's that Akane was.
The fanservice and assortment of girls for all tastes made Love Hina incredibly popular for its time, and Naru happening to be the main girl gave the executives of the publishing companies the impression that she was the factor that needed to be copied across the industry, much like the unnatural prevalence of stories featuring reincarnation into worlds with game mechanics nowadays. Thus, harems, particularly ones with tsundere main girls, were mass-produced and heavily promoted, and Japanese internet users of the early 00s came up with the term "tsundere" to describe the phenomenon. It wasn't until around Shakugan no Shana that the word tsundere became common knowledge, so the term was backported to describe earlier girls with similar personalities such as Asuka. This also led to the meaning of kuudere being distorted, since it was originally meant to describe cool sarcastic girls (hence "cool" dere) like Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road, who were seen as a variant of tsundere, but Asuka vs Rei waifu wars made people misinterpret kuudere as referring to characters like Rei, who are actually known as dandere ("danmari" means quiet).
>>
>>287608933
I feel like a major defining factor of Love Hina was how none of the girls really like Keitaro at the beginning, which contrasted heavily with every other "Harem" anime of the time in which the male love interest was beloved by every women involved in the story. (Tenchi Muyo for example). I feel like this idea of having to "Earn" the respect of the women around him rather than having it handed towards him by default, was what other anime at the time begun to shift towards. And then, as this anon said a few years later we got the Rie Kugimiya tsundere boom, with Shana and Zero no Tsukaima, and these kinda merged with the movement Love Hina had already created, and created the afore-mentioned overfocus on tsunderes.

I'm no anime historian though, so this may all just be bullshit conjecture. I only came to this topic to wank over how much hair Tsuruya has anyway.
>>
>>287609536
How far back can we track the "dere archetypes" and the "harem" genre as a concept that is known as a thing in the comunity and not just an element of a prehistoric show?
>>
>>287608933
I mean Yuki is only selectively quiet, as she does tend to talk quite a bit at length whenever she is discussing something she has a lot of knowledge in.
On the other hand she is a lot less talkative when it comes to personal/socio-emotional matters than someone like Rei, Yuki tends to keep those conversations down to a few words per sentence, whereas Rei is quite a bit more open to share her thoughts and feelings whenever she talks about those sort of things.
>>
>>287610455
A lot of the exact details are likely lost to old Japanese image boards from the 00s and Japanese BBSes from the 90s, but there is a dedicated dere wiki that researches the origins of the various dere archetypes.

>The term "tsundere" was created on the Japanese Internet to describe the character Ayu Daikuhji from the 2001 erotic visual novel Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (JP). The term was first coined on August 29, 2002, when a user on the Japanese forum site Suspicious World made a post referring to Ayu's personality as being "tsuntsunderedere" (ツンツンデレデレ) due to the constant switching between her personality. The term tsuntsunderedere began circulating on the site as a popular term and many people on Suspicious World started using the term to refer to her. Eventually, the term spread to another Japanese forum site 2channel where it was soon after shortened to simply "tsundere" (ツンデレ)

I’ve always wondered: why does the first person who coins a new term never take credit for it?
I’m so curious about who the Jap was that came up with this word—do you think he still alive? Does he still watch anime?

>>
>>287611645
If it's a useful word, it will spread naturally and speak for itself. Seeking recognition for it defeats the point and makes it about you rather than about a desire to enrich the discourse by identifying and succinctly capturing the essence of a concept in a new word, and in worst case, some schizo will latch onto you and naysay it all over the place because you once called out a retarded take he had.

>Mikuru is the “wrong” option and Kyon has to pick Haruhi over her regardless of his feelings about them
Not really? The show only brings up that Haruhi might blow up the world if that happened but even that is actually not quite true. The Haruhi that became so depressed she'd blow up the world was pre-Melancholy 6, but post Melancholy 6 Haruhi is a lot more mature. At the end of the day Kyon is in love with Haruhi, even though he likes Mikuru this isn't on the same level.

Actually yes, for her to have an easier time watching over Haruhi she needed to be in control of the class by being the class rep.
I don't know about murica but in some countries class reps tend to be the popular hot girls of the class, being attractive is important for that purpose, and if it is paired with a good personality then it is the cherry on top.
