What was that random as hell tangent at the end about the boy who wouldn't shake her hand?
>>

the movie is a mess

>she was asked by the old lady to stay and marry the country guy
>she freaked out and ran away
>she believed herself to be a phony, who was only enjoy the country life because she knew she only had to stay there for 10(?) days and could away run back to the city
>she remembered about the dirty and stinky boy who noone wanted to sit next to in class
>she pretended to tolerate the boy and acted nice to him even though she hated it
>when the boy was moving away, he shook hand with everyone in class except her
>she thought that was because he saw through her and knew she was a phony girl
>in reality, the country guy told her it's more likely that the boy liked her and just wanted to act tough in front of her
This was when she realized she enjoyed being around the guy, leading to the ending where she decided to stay in the countryside.

Seems overly convoluted for a simple idea. Maybe it's just my autism

I like how the scene leads you to believe she's freaking out because the farmers were casually talking about her life decisions and relationship with whatshisname in front of her without consideration, kinda like when she overheard her mother and sister. But then as she explains you realize that'd be out of character for someone like her given what we have seen by that point.

I also like the parallel between the poor kid and his father and taeko and her mother. It's kind of relief to know the poor kid at least has a father that cares about him.

Yes. It balances Shinkai's city good countryside bad.

You have to be an adult to understand this movie.
To understand an adult’s nostalgia for childhood.
If you’re underage, you won’t understand a thing. You’re better off sticking to your Jujutsu Kaisen and isekai shows for kids that’s what’s appropriate for your age.

It's not a particularly great movie. It's worth watching, but you're not going to get something that's as well thought out as the better Ghibli films, even if it has its charms.

My impression is kind of the opposite, it seems to appeal somewhat more to younger people who want to see themselves as someone with the maturity to take in slower paced, adult works. As an adult now older than the characters, it feels awkward to see people in their twenties obsess over their childhood specifically so much, it comes of as something old ladies would do but seems unfitting for an adult not even a decade out from their teenage years. The childhood scenes themselves were well done, the film as a whole is a pretty pastiche of SoL that's nice, but the "frame narrative" feels weak and doesn't elevate the experience given this. I have nostalgia for my childhood and many fond memories, but I don't feel like that way nostalgia is put on show here by the narrative is mature or a display of the mindset of a healthy minded 27 year old.
