I've been sitting through the current daily of the manga for a while and I genuinely don't understand - Why in the world did this series become so popular? I really don't get it. It's so shitty, boring and uncreative. It's the most generic shounen you could possibly think of, and it just keeps dragging on and on ad nauseam. The plot is really shitty, the characters are poorly written and the artstyle keeps getting worse and worse. I feel like people would be tearing it to shreds if it was released today. And yet it has so many people who still call it an excellent story to this day. Is it just because the first few arcs were really popular, and because of that the series simply became too big to fail?

Look at naruto spreads, and they "feel" like they are in motion. It doesn't feel like a snapshot. Immediately elevates it.3. Power system creativity. We are told this world has elemental jutsus, but right off the bat, we get creative stuff like sharingan, oro, lee etc.. Only basic bitch elemental powers focused on are Uchihas and fire.4.Body horror elements in Naruto are extremely fun. It's creepy, creative and memorable for a younger audience. 5. Shipping bait.6. After some time, the over-arching theme of the story becomes clear. Naruto == Hope == Jesus, Sasuke == Despair. Naruto has to save Sasuke. Sasuke being given equal agency by the author only elevates the premise, and readers are invested on how it turns out.7. Fights are creative and fun.8. Manga operates like wrestling. We have cool characters engaging in cool fights, the plot is loosely held together, but the central theme is clear. It's a product of good timing and just being culturally relevant. Naruto's world is more distinctly Japanese than say DBZ or Pokemon or YGO. It was one of the first anime in the US that "felt" like a Japanese show without heavy censorship, westernized names, or changing the iconography for American kids. Fight scenes in the anime inspired artists and directors in real life, from Horikoshi to Michael B Jordan. Then there is the plot of Naruto, especially the Pain arc, which speaks directly to post WW2 Japan. The Biju are Kishimoto's take on nuclear Godzilla monsters and M.A.D.
