Hitoshi never actually went anywhere, or at best just made a bunch of orbits around the system, while a good half a million years or so passed on Earth. Meanwhile humans managed to uplift a bunch of animal species to caveman levels (which is where the legends of Hito even came from) before being wiped out by some sort of human specific cataclysm like a virus, and the other species continued to develop. This is why: 1. There are so many intelligent, bipedal species all at roughly the same evolutionary development to begin with 2. They are all direct analogs to pre-existing Earth species 3. Hitoshi hasn't had any serious environmental concerns on a planet he didn't evolve on, no issues with oxygen levels on the planet, temperatures, biological cycles to do with planet orbit, etc. 4. Hitoshi has been able to recreate his own cuisine with minor difficulty (the ingredients are the same, just run through thousands of years of re-naturalization, divergence, and re-cultivation for different palates) 5. Hitoshi has been repeatedly fixated on the celestial bodies - the moon, the stars. He is slowly identifying that they are the same ones he knows from Earth, altered slightly in position and arrangement over time

Maybe they figured it didn't matter as the planet would likely be suitable for him to live in and populated with humans by the time he arrived anyways). Once again, something happened to the humans, establishing the Hito legend, and the uplifted animals that were left continued to develop. The awkward part of this theory is the lack of info about his journey - how far was he actually traveling, how fast, does it make sense that his original travel time was something that could be exceeded by technological development, and also allow time for the uplifted animals to continue to develop naturally.
