It's the best and worst part of Frieren because the writer has no idea what he wants to do with them.

It cannot be fully resisted, only rules-lawyered around for a time ("yes, I'll kill all those humans one day... but not today"). And nearly all of them don't even consciously realize that they have this impulse and that their behavior is not fully rational. Thus all the answers along the lines "but WHY you are asking me to not kill humans" which make them appear to be mimics, stringing words together without understanding them to those who can't see their memories and internal monologue.
