The more time passes and the older I get, the more I realize how lame and tryhard this show actually is.
The first half of the series holds up just fine as a slow-burn mystery, but the second half tries way too hard to show how "crazy" and "serious" it is by pivoting into traumaslop and conspiracy theories. It feels like it's trying to overcompensate for the slow start by throwing as much "suffering" at the screen as possible.
And the early 10s otaku culture stuff, the constant redditspeak, the "le quirky mad scientist" schizo rambling, and the garbage humor has aged badly as well. What used to pass for "deep" sci-fi writing now just feels like a collection of dated internet tropes and chuuni cringe that is hard to sit through as an adult.

I have to watch it again, but I remember the second part had a lot of plot twists and shock value that surprised me when I started reading and watching shows, but now I think about it and it really doesn't add much. Besides, the series doesn't have a central theme or anything like that, so it ends up being quite basic. It definitely has flaws. Kurisu best girl

The time travel sci fi in SG was never deep, even back then I was bothered by how basic it was under all the fake complexity of the lore.
>>
The real problem is it isn't that interesting, at its core it's just a time loop story.
>>
>>287632756
>a lot of plot twists
There aren't really any twists, every event and character reveal is very bluntly foreshadowed. Suzuha is the best example of this since pretty much every single scene she's in includes some reference to her being a time traveler...just in case you missed the peak at her in episode 1.
>Besides, the series doesn't have a central theme or anything like that
Yeah, definitely rewatch it since the theme is almost stated outright by Okabe

How i am wrong though, the story literally ends when okabe ends the loop, there's literally only 1 point to this story and it isn't the characters despite what it's fans say.
>>
NGE yesterday, SG today?
>>
>>287634666
It's a greek tragedy and the appeal is Okabe's journey through hell. The time travel is just a plot device.

History teaches that those who hold wisdom are often the most foolish. The fish in the sea know not the land. If they too hold wisdom, they too will be destroyed. It is more ridiculous for man to exceed light speed than for fish to live ashore. This may be called God's ultimatum to those who rebel

what theme or message? that you can fix your shitty future i guess but thats basically any time travel story, it is not deep or anything (it doesnt need to be)
>>
>>287635662
S;G plays on the classic favorite of the otaku, the hedgehog's dilemma. Okabe's entire motivation is that he just wanted friends, and that's what the entire story is about. Even the time travel element is essentially a tool that lets him try to get to know the people around him over and over until he reaches the "perfect route" where he has a group of close friends whose problems he helps to address. That's even the purpose of the Kyouma persona, it's a cover he uses because he's too embarrassed to socialize directly. The anime does a great job of highlighting the theme by placing a major emphasis of Okabe's eyes and the way he watches others.
>>
Why does /a/ hate Steins;Gate so much in recent years? I get hype backlash is a thing, but S;G is a perfectly solid show. The hateboner is weird. I wonder if the crusade of hatred is conducted by Zoomers or if Millennials have turned on their roots. 2004-2012 is peak Millennial for anime.
>>
>>287636011
Post-2020 tourists who got their ideas about anime from /pol/ and twitter hate older anime because it's so blatant with progressive themes and messages, but they know they'll look like total newfags if they just complain about the woke things that trigger them in anime so they have to pretend to be critical of things like storytelling and art despite having no training in analysis and critique.
It's a sort of reverse gatekeeping where they isolate themselves off as a new fandom by creating a canon of what shows must be hated that mirrors the canon of shows that were popular with the original fandom.
>>
>>287636011
It is unironically a generational war. Steins;Gate is beloved by millennials and hated by zoomers. Unfortunately, 4chan is filled with zoomers and tourists now.
>>
>>287636011
new fans dislike anything otaku-related or when the anime is too much anime. sg has suspense and new fans only consume suspense/action; but it is too much for them. also it has emotional moments.

older fans hate it because its popular and the fanbase is annoying as fuck, specially in the vn side

I don't think zoomers have the patience for a show that develops slowly and doesn't explicitly state the plot at least three times. That's why the vultures are all over Azumanga: because it's based on a 4koma, it is uncomplicated, and the jokes are rapid fire.
>>
>>287636011
Because if you step away from the period where time travel and ironic weeb humor were extremely hyped the story is not actually that good.

I don't think what it does ages at all. It was considered as "le quirky" back then. Maybe it's just you being old and sour and wanting something heavy and serious without childish naivities or lightheartedness.

I didn't read or watch anything Steins;Gate until last year, though. I read the VN last year, and watched the anime this year... almost done with the 0 VN. I almost watched Steins;Gate while it aired, but Spring 2011 was stacked and I ended up not watching it. The otaku humor didn't age well but the story itself is good and structured well. Build-up, heroine routes, climax. Nice and solid story structure.
>>
>>287638637
I don't know, I've seen this format of time travel plot too many times and I don't see anywhere that Steins;Gate excels compared to what I've already seen. I think I enjoyed Edge of Tomorrow more and it fit almost all of those exact same time loop plot points into a 2 hour movie that had better acting.
>>
>>287638686
Maybe you should just stick with American movies since you don't like anime
>>
>>287638834
I do like anime, I'm just not beholden to it. That part of why I think fans of Steins;Gate need to watch more and understand how derivative the story is.
>>
>>287638457
>Maho betrays you but it's okay because she's a cute girl

I mean, she was getting threatened/brainwashed, while Leskinen is a complete fake while befriending Okabe. Yeah, the plot flows like that because Maho is a cute girl while Leskinen is an ugly old man, but there is an in-story justification.

This literally never gets old for me and I'm almost 30. I don't even know why, maybe it's the dry humour, I just think Okabe picking up the phone and saying "It's me." as if he's some schizo-paranoid maniac. Every single time. Doppio from JoJo had me in tears too.

The show is still kino.
But Zoomers are salty that everyone still talks about it over a decade and a half later.
Why are they salty? Well it's simple.
Zoomers and/or tourists(Redundant I know) go through a new "Anime of the decade!" every season only for them to immediately get forgotten and treated like flavors of the month.

So they can't comprehend fans who actually like, and continue to enjoy, the same show after 15 years, when they can't even focus their attention on a show for more than a couple of months for looking for the next big hit.

> deep sci-fi
Maybe this is the problem. Some people expect too much from it. By modern high standards it's not that deep. But it's not shallow either. If I were to score how elaborate it gets about its shit, I would maybe rate it 7 out of 10. Time travel is a very hard topic to get right, and they did impressive work to try. It's far from perfect, but it's not bad at all. If you compare to other sci-fi shows or animes, you should consider not only if topic is perfectly covered but also how hard topic is and the amount of work done to try to cover it. A lot of sci-fi is just easier and doesn't take much to make you satisfied with "backstory of technology or phenomena". Way more often this backstory is barebones and shallow and still passable, because it's something more mundane. There is an illusion that it's covered because it's something that doesn't even need to be covered.
