It's not a masterpiece, but it isn't some low brow retard journey either. There are some good introspective psychological episodes, almost always revolving around questions of the self and how humans struggle in life devoid of meaning. I didn't watch it for the action, and some episodes drag, but if you're paying attention there is a genuinely interesting story being told. Probably needed a little more time in the oven, or a few more episodes to transition the plot better, but at least it tried to be thunk provoking, which is more than I can say for the vast majority of anime and semitic western cartoons. What was great about Re-l is how Iggy was right about her. She acts competent, in control, wise, but she's actually just the product of nepotism and isn't as remotely smart or capable as she likes to act. But she has actual character development too.

I think a lot of the reason that many shows from the 2000s like Fullmetal Alchemist (and Brotherhood), GiTS SAC, Witch Hunter Robin, Paranoia Agent, Kino's Journey and even Gurren Lagann to an extent are remembered so fondly was because they tried to be more than seasonal animes and really did try to be evangelists of a life philosophy which many people hold thanks to these shows and especially their creators (and a lot of their art too in all honestly. It was the last era where traditional media was used and the mix of digital and traditional drawing media gives a lot of these shows a distinct look on top of their unique art design), all without taking themselves too seriously and being good animes in their own right. I think it's possible we'll get them back in the future, but it won't be overnight. It'll be something that happens in the next couple decades or so.
