>>287647900i think it had one of the best chapter 1's in quite a while. now this is me nerding about writing, so bear with me.kagurabachi's first chapter follows the kishotenketsu (the asian 4 acts structure) perfectly.the first thing you see is chihiro forging a sword with his dad, then the spread is him cutting through some goons. this alone tells you everything about the series, that it's gonna be a battleshonen themed around katana and already hints at the main character's goal, methods and backstory. this just in the color pages alone.then after this intro it takes a step back and shows us his life with his dad. quite a large portion of the chapter is dedicated to it before we go back to the present.then there's the twist: we learn that his dad made special magic katana and chihiro has one.and then it concludes with a cool action scene and saving that one dude we've seen be attacked by the yakuza.it does a great job of connecting themes, have a complete narrative on its own but also leave a bunch of mysteries to tie the reader to the next chapter (we still don't know what happened to his dad at this point).Chapter 2 is a bit of a bonus chapter, giving us more details about the setting and delineates the overarching plot.and then chapter 3 is the introduction of char and the start of the sojo arcmany axebaits wish they could have such a tight pacing and density of information

It’s an important event, and it’s been established that the strongest have arrived, so it’s cool to see them struggling against an unknown force rather than just jobbing and getting insta-killed for the sake of making islanders scary. I wonder if this will be the trend for the flashback (some downtime flowing into fight in the second part of volume) or we’ll go into huge character work and interactions after this
