Frieren is trying to be genres in one: SoL, drama, and action.But SoL doesn't mix well with drama and action, SoL is a safe genre, drama and action need danger.In the beginning the show seemed to be able to balance these aspects reasonably well since we only just got to know these characters.But you can't have meaningful drama if your main characters are superficial and static.You also can't have meaningful action if your main characters are overpowered from the start.And you can't have good SoL if your main characters are boring and way too similar to each other to have interesting interactions.Since they are superficial, boring, and overpowered and have no meaningful development away from being superficial, boring, and overpowered, the SoL keeps being boring, no interesting drama can happen, and the action will always be safe with little at stake.The best way out is to develop the main characters, to give them actual depth, let them develop their own distinct personalities, explore their own life stories, find their own motivations, and let them have actual weaknesses they have to overcome to grow.Then the show can be good in any of the categories, it can be a good SoL, have good drama, have good action, though maybe not all at once.

Everyone having the same monotone way of expressing themselves was also a huge turnoff
