She's terrible at people skills and can't fill in for Farnese's job of watching out for Casca, or managing her precocious crush on Guts. It forged him into the stoic lone wolf he tends to be, which caused him to rely on his bloodlust and rage to fuel him, which he then had to enchain when he started surrounding himself with people again that he didn't want to die.
