It's not even artsy, it's clearly just drawn by someone who's not a great artist (or not good at drawing anyway, maybe better with watercolours) but the vibes are immaculate. It has as slow and slice of life a plot you can have and is neither well drawn (sometimes not drawn at all, see the "I'm interested." page) nor incredibly deep, and it's entirely feels based. I love Misato.

This is going to sound really dumb but I think one of .A's strongest characteristics is the rhythm at which narration is delivered. Something about the way it physically separates balloons across the page and intersperses them with other stuff really works for me. It has this kind of slow pace where things get to breathe and settle in, and I think all the empty space actually helps with that.

Hanazaki is by and far the worst thing that's happened to her in the story. And even with that we're shown that she has the capacity within herself to know his faggot polycule nonsense isn't fair to her and she needs to value herself enough to not give in to it. Yes, she does indeed have actual problems (her relationship with her grandmother is horrendous and heavily feeds into her self-image issues and desperation for a relationship) that contribute to her not being able to handle situations that are more typical stressors. I don't want her to break down and feel like she ruined everything just because she was fine with someone lying down in public while someone else wasn't. Any positivity she might've had instantly vanishing when something catches her off guard and upsets her is her biggest weakness.

It's just hard for me to treat this as misery porn. For example, in chapter 2 Happy feels like she keeps screwing up with Dante because of how his mom keeps reacting, but in chapter 3 we see his mom is actually extremely cordial with Happy/wasn't at all still bothered by it, she even calls out to her first when she meets her on the street. Dante himself adores Happy. People like her, she's not a stain on the Earth nor is every little thing her fault, and I want her to be able to realize that in situations where she's shutting down and 'o-owari da!!!'ing.

She's the protagonist, we identify with her, we can see what's going on in her head and we can tell when she's blowing up something unimportant (e.g. kid's mom looks at her wrong) or when she's probably about to step on a rake. These are things many people go through or can sympathise with, and comedy draws out the inherently absurd aspects of them. The point is she's not alone in feeling this way, it's depicted sympathetically, and readers who find that the author gets what it's like to suffer from these things can take some comfort in being able to laugh a little at themselves.
Feeling bad for her when something really unfair has happened, and happy for her when she claws back some self-esteem, are about sharing those emotions, not treating them as an alien thing separate from yourself. It's not a sadistic exercise in pain, it has a message of resilience and encouragement.

Can not agree. In both cases the people causing her the most strife in life are presented with negative aspects. Beyond them, almost every other thing that stresses Happy out follows up with something positive that helps her calm down, or at least lets us see the situation is just not as bad as she thinks. (I.e. Dante and his mom, the sauna chick and her dad, having Kuri as a friend in general.) That and we're shown again and again that she is, to her core, a legitimately nice person. In comparison;

Constantly hounding Happy into getting into a relationship because it's what was expected of her when she was younger. She outright says her husband used to make her cry but whatever at least she was in a relationship. That can only be read as her trying to push Happy into a box because that's the box she was in herself.

Literally as soon as Happy rejected him he hard shut down his nice guy act and started shitting on her immediately since he couldn't get some secondary coochie. Him being able to spew all that venom as soon as she steps out of line shows that these are thoughts he'd held about her for a while, but he was willing to try and bank on her 'over-sensitivity' and hope she'd get lost enough in his kindness that she'd accept without issue. He's a two-faced dickhead. I don't feel any malice toward Happy from the author at all. I can understand why the comedic aspects wouldn't exactly click, but I certainly don't think they're done to be cruel.

West Tokyo Metal Bros is merely alright so far, but it does win the "Author is making sure this never gets an anime" award.

On the other hand, the negative reaction to Gheer also caused the backlash against Raloud to decrease, when Raloud was first introduced, he was harshly criticized as generic and boring.
