Worldbuilding so intricate speculative fiction writer Ted Chiang called it the best ever put to film, yet it's pretty much forgotten outside of anime enthusiast circles.

Normies actually prefer things that are not quite so amazing.

The most popular series have terrible worldbuilding, so maybe worldbuilding isn't worth wasting time on.

It's the same mauritanian.

The intricate worldbuilding in question: What if the Soviet Union vs American space war turned hot? Wow so unique and interesting
>>
>>287703820
There is no space race in this film and the cultures depicted are not analogues of the American and Soviet ones. Try harder.

Fuck off.

Characters don't exist in a vacuum, they need a world to exist in, influence, and be influenced by
>>

Nobody gives a flying fuck about worldbuilding except some highly mentally ill people, is the bottom of the barrel of the entertainment media.

Worldbuilding is more important than adding a million pointless characters
>>
>>287704183
Sure, but good worldbuilding is when those worlds exist in spite of the characters, yet the majority of stories have worlds that exist specifically for the characters. Just look at Hunter x Hunter and Jujutsu Kaisen. If characters aren't on the screen or mentioned in speech bubbles, they probably don't exist. The same characters show up arc after arc, despite the world logically requiring tons of other characters to exist who should be showing up instead. Characters are always given reasons to exit the story, but they're never explained so we don't know what they are - and it's honestly difficult to imagine what they could be, given the abilities the characters in question are capable of.

No? Good worldbuilding serves the story being told.

Bad worldbuilding is a bunch of trivia that doesn't affect the main characters at all.

with this freakin logic dude it means you're trashing ELDER SCROLLS LORE and TES LORE IS FUCKING EPIC.

did you know the central figure in knights of the nine in oblivion is actually a cyborg terminator genocidal homosexual from the future according to obscure off-site lorebook #12378?? bet you didn't know that!
>>
>>287705030
It's not trivia, it's about the believability of the world. Worldbuilding needs to serve the story only in the sense that the story falls apart when the reader's attention is drawn to the fact the world is an artifice of the author. You might have a good message, but people will be less inclined to listen to it if all they can think about is, "Why are high schoolers saving the world instead of adults?" Good worldbuilding prevents those intrusive thoughts.

As a casual consumer of sci-fi I have never even heard of this man or any of his works. Have you considered he might just be your favorite author without being wildly popular?

So you all will know the seriousness of my warning, I shall say this in English.
As your leader, I encourage you from time to time, and always in a respectful manner, to question my logic. If you're unconvinced that a particular plan of action I've decided is the wisest, tell me so, but allow me to convince you and I promise you right here and now, no subject will ever be taboo. Except, of course, the subject that was just under discussion. The price you pay for bringing up either my Chinese or American heritage as a negative is... I collect your fucking head. Just like this fucker here. Now, if any of you sons of bitches got anything else to say, now's the fucking time!
